Default Starter Motor Sticking

Hello, on my 1995 classic my starter motor is playing up. For days she starts first turn of the key, no problem at all. Others you turn the key and after a few seconds of hold the key in the starting position and then she starts.

Then when its having a rubbish day, you turn the key and nothing, not a sound. All lights on dash on ready to start but nothing. I have to put it into gear and rock the car a few times or roll it down a hill (not bump it)and then it starts perfectly.

I know its no real hardship to rock her but she is quite heavy and i'm not always in the right shoes . I'm starting to worry about if she is going to start at all because I dont want to get stuck somewhere. Nothing more embarassing than walking up to my car, jumping in and then having to get out to push her to start her.

I have worked out that the starter spring or whatever isn't going back into place when I stop the car and rocking her does this which means she will start.
My question is, is there a way to fix it myself other than buying a new one as I dont have the funds after doing all the timing belts etc the beginning of the month.

Thanks Claire

Starters are not really servicable, it's usually a exchange job from a reconditioners, sorry

Suppose you could remove it and give it a soaking, see it helps but you'll end up replacing it eventually.

Modern starters are not MEANT to be overhauled, but can be. They were put together, so can be taken apart. It MIGHT respond to being stripped, cleaned and regreased
