I have a 53WRX and can anyone tell me at what RPM the wastegate opens. On my car the boost gauge starts to go to + at about 2300 RPM is this correct or should the revs be a bit higher. I am thinking the actuator is opening a bit too soon.

The wastegate is reliant on turbo output pressure to open, on most turbo setups the wastegate will be mechanically set to open at about 0.5 BAR then using the boost solenoid to achieve boost pressure above 0.5 BAR. The wastegate needs to be closed for the turbo to generate boost. In 3rd gear and above most turbos will happily show + pressure from the moment you push the accelerator, spool times to full boost pressure will vary due to turbo size, exhaust type and the size of the intercooler pipework etc.

The wastegate is a part of the turbo/boost system, basically, it's a pressure relief valve.
