you can replace what ever part you want of the exhaust in s.s.....so YES, if you replace the down pipe for a de cat you should have your car re mapped as you are removing the main cataylist .... you MAY be ok replacing the exhaust headers for s.s ones with out a remap,i havent done it myself but know and heard of people who havd run classics with ss headers, back box, and 2nd de cat without a re map, but its advised to get your car remapped so it gets the bennifit from the new proformance parts and uses them to there full potential....And so they do not reck your engine

If your not going mad on power i'd say go for OEM ported and polished. Then wrap them

On a classic the up pipe doesnt have a cat in only downpipe and centre section.

Can't you swap the ECU from another model on this MY? For example fit an ECU from a JDM WRX?

No. Because the maps will be unsuitable.

The 98 UK has a TD04L. The 97/98 JDMs ran VF23 and VF24 turbos.

Simple answer is no - uk 1998 turbo 208 bhp running td04, 1998 wrx 280 bhp running vf 23/24,so even though the ecu will fit ,it is set up to run on 100 ron fuel, and for a much bigger turbo,so fuelling and the boost settings will be different

Best to fit the "correct MY" VF (is it a 23 or 24, btw?) - a direct front entry fit - and the appropriate WRX ECU, so that its map "matches" the turbo.

I think the MY97/98 WRX's turbo was the VF24(?) i.e. the smaller of the two VFs mentioned.

Note: I think you may have to swap the cam and crank sensors' pinout around in the ECU (and also some other pinout that I can't think of right now).

If you ask your questions to JGM, he'll be able to advise correctly.....
