You will get some build up after a while and its normally from worn shell bearings.

Main thing to check is that the crank has no pits or scratches on the journals where the shell bearings sit, the bores are in good shape, the oil pump isn't in kit form and the camshaft carrier caps, the head where cam sits and the cam itself are in good condition. Also check small ends, gudgeon pin and pistons for damage!

Basically anything thats meant to be nice and shiney is lol

Before you even begin to carry on, if those filings are off the main bearing then you need that engine cleaning out properly, ensuring that when you rebuild it, you have replaced the oil pump, modine etc, even the crank can be upgraded to a new one with better oil feed.

Oil smoke? If so more likely to be worn piston rings causing high crankcase pressure, worn valve stem seals, damaged turbo or blocked breathers.

If the whole lots out you just as well do the whole kit n kerboodle! Rings, shells, stem seals, cam n crank seals etc!

It may seem extreme if it all "looks" good but you'll be royally pissed off if u get a leak or continuing white oil smoke and you have to pull it apart again!!

One thing you'll learn with a scoob, it don't pay to cut corners (like u said, why big ends and not mains!) and if you think you're saving money you're probably not lol. The only way to save dosh and labour time is to do it right from the beginning 

As Tony B has pointed out.
New oil pump is a must.
