coils packs are always a pain, have a look at them to see the age/condition. If they are the originals probably worth sourcing new ones. Or try see if anyone near has 93-96 car that has coil packs & try theres on your car before shelling out loads for new ones. approx £70 each delivered & obviously you need 4

have you also tried doing an ecu test & re-set. go to the Jolly green monsters website & on there is a how to guide. this might show any sensor issues.

edit to say - this is what i would check first, could be another issue though!

'map' do you mean MAF sensor? as in the mass air flow sensor that is next to the air filter on that intake pipe?
if you have changed that, then it may help just to do another test check & reset the ecu

their is also the coolant temp sensor that can cause issues when cold (about £27 new) im not sure if this comes up on the sensor checking though.
But im pretty sure its a common fault. I had to change mine on this & my previous scoob & for £27 its worth doing, again though it might not be whats causing your issue.

it was the map sensor side of the throttle body, which is the coolant temp sensor the one in the block between the powersteering pump and the alternator?

oh rite!
no its not that, looks similar, but the coolant temp sensor is a pain in the a$$ to get to.
as you look at the engine from the front, its the left hand side under the intake manifold towards the back. & its on an angle going in with a clip on connector going onto it. really awkward angle to see it & may take a while to find it but thats the best description i can give sorry!
