Default Possible seized brake, any advice?

While driving home this evening I noticed the car didn't feel quite right, like I had left the handbrake on a tiny bit. When I got home I noticed the nearside front brake was smelling hot and smoking very slightly. I have taken the pads out and they and the disc look OK but I think the lower pot may be seized as I couldn't get it to withdraw at all.

I have put the assembly back together (the pads were very difficult to get back in) and had a gentle potter up and down the road and it seems OK now.

I want to get the brakes checked, obviously, but is the pot replaceable or will it be the whole caliper? How much is a decent independent garage likely to charge?

The car is a V5 STI with the standard 2 pot caliper.

Thanks.

Eh? Std fit caliper/disc is the 4-pot (SUBARU embossed on caliper body) and 294mm disc.

Are you sure you have 2-pots? A typo surely?

EDIT: Yeah, a typo as you mentions earlier "...lower pot..." There are two pots at the front.... but another two in other half of the caliper, behind the disc.

ian @ godspeed brakes will sort it out for you, doubt you will need a new caliper, possibly a new piston or 2. Or even just clean them up & get new seal kit if they are knackered, again Ian can sort you out & very prompt & helpful service

Jonny, I have a set of perfectly working 4-pots for sale. They need stripping of their paint (and repainted if necessary), as they look a bit ratty. But they work fine. Would only want around £99 quid for 'em (because of their superficial aesthetics). But that's prob a bit of unnecessary overspend, given your issue.

Or you can get seals or the full seals+pistons refurb kits off eBay. Or from Ian as mentioned.
