JGM quoted 400 as the maximum that these engines can run, but that seems quite high.

For that though the list of mods would also probably include uprate intake pipe, 255 fuel pump and a FMIC (...and uprated clutch)

if your after modifying it, sell and buy an STI, the cost of all the parts you need will be offset by the better base of the STI as its just a different beast to start with.

based on your target power, ditch the wrx topmount for an sti jobbie.

sti topmount will do the job if you are aiming for 350, much cheaper and simpler sti topmounts are maxxed out at 370ish depending on who you ask so 340-450 will be no probs.

Depending on the miles on the clock the engine has done too and what tlc you give it will help too.

If your going ***** out I'd change the timing belt too.
The engine may take it but have heard and see the gear & clutches go on WRX's just short of 340bhp. But others I have seen take up to 380-410bhp (JGM mapped cars)
STi TMIC care good for 400bhp. Some other cars have hit more still using the STi TMIC but some with cooling methods be it meth etc.

I max'd out my STi TMIC at 411bhp on my Bugeye STi.

Here's rough list of what would be required if you wanted to do it with the WRX.
De-cat or good Sports CAT down pipe
De-cat up pipe
vf34 or 18g (18g will be more agressive on the engine etc though)
Boost controller or 3 port depending on what turbo you go for.
2.75"-3.0" exhaust system
CAIK
STi TMIC or go FMIC even better
255 fuel Pump
Clutch
Timing belt
Oil Change ( and every 3k after to be safe)
STi pink injectors to be on the safe side
EcuTek or Simtek ECU + MAP

Should see results from 320bhp-350bhp.

Then your be wise to change the Brake set up to something with that extra bite.
ARB
Drop Links

I'll most likely get corrected or have put something down that is or is not required but hey. I haven't had my intake of coffee just yet. lol

Depends on what you define as safe? Tuning on the limits or close to will almost certainly shorten the lifespan of the engine.

Wouldn't go for anything harder hitting than a VF34 if you want to keep your gearbox intact. Budget £2-3k for a gearbox that is upto the job of some of the limits posted. Mine stripped 2nd gear with 340ft/lbs of torque.

Maybe cheaper/better to sell up and buy an STi? Better brakes, intercooling, engine, gearbox etc etc.

Have an 04plate wrx, bottom end was on it's way so rebuilt with STI/Forge parts/internals, including a new cam belt and clutch.

Then had Following fitted;
VF35
STI TMIC
Pink injectors
Full 3" turbo back exhaust (decat)
Walbro 255
Induction

Finished off with a ECUTEK Remap.

Results of a safe 342bhp - 296ft/lbs of torque

WRX handling is **** so a rear ARB and droplinks sorted that (but still debating about the front ARB+Droplinks)

Brakes Also **** so new grooved disks front and back, EBC Yellow/BlueStuff pads and braided lines soon helped that issue but still could do better.

And after spending 5k on the car and coming up to 5k after (including rebuild) I would say............. I wish I just bought an STI.

Don't get me wrong I absolutely love my car now but still feel abit like waste of time and money.

Just my opinion.

And just to add bottom end was knocking at just 37000 miles and that was at standard spec.

It's now on 42000 and running fine but gearbox crunches when changing into 4th at high revs so next credit card bill due soon I think

I was planning on doing similar but ended up selling the wrx and have bought a jdm sti, so glad I did as no worries about gearbox, suspension and brakes now. The WRX was great and at PPP level was a superb car but just couldn't warrant the expense and potential problems I might have by going any further with it, insurance was cheaper than a modded wrx as well. So think long and hard before you do anything.

All good advice here - I got my 2002 WRX to 370BHP but only 320 lbft - was a very laggy turbo! Gearbox held out but I destroyed a big end on the way home from the Nurburgring - I'd say, de/sports - cat exhaust (2.75/3'), Panel filter, Sti Pinks (I have some for sale soon), STi Tmic, and uprated turbo (VF34/35 or TD05 18g), Fuel pump upgrade with a good remap from a respected Mapper.

my spec is as follows

2005 wrx blob eye
VF53 turbo
pink injectors
2.5 " full decat
harvey uppipe
walbro fuel pump
k&n pannel filter
ngk 7 plugs
sti intercooler with scoop and tray
tvg deleats, coolant deleat,
Duncan Remap Race dynamixs

We estimate it to be over 340 bhp pulls very hard with very very little lag, will be porting headers and fitting a cold air induction kit too soon.

I had to replace clutch but car has done 60k, i think u will be fine up to about 360 bhp just warm it up, cool it down give it good oil like millers and do not launch it and i do not think u will have any worries.

Also if i was to do it again i would use a vf43 turbo these are more readily available now, will give more kick.

Also i would have bought an sti if i knew i would want to keep modding though, but hay where do u draw the line.....

trust me u will love it mate
