Question COLD START PROBLEM 96 UK TURBO

Hey guys just wondering if you could shed a little light on a situation i have? when starting the car from cold it starts but it's like it's not choking cause it burbles under 750rpm and won't rev but finally after a couple seconds it comes good and revs up to 1500rpm by itself?? sounds like a bit of a misfire whilst it's doing this too! it is due a service just can't afford to get it done at the mo......

All comments appreciated

Steve, Norm
You're both looking at the usual suspects with a problem like this: plugs, coil-pack(s), MAF, in no particular order.

Plugs: how old are they, do the tips look worn?
coil-pack(s): any obvious signs of cracks or chipping on the end that connects to the plug?
if you disconnect the coil-packs one at a time, does the idle stay identical with one of them off?
MAF: how long has it been on the car? Does you car have an induction kit or dump-valve?

Haven't investigated yet Mark but also on initial start up when i try to rev, it dies instead then comes good and is fine after that! could this be a MAF problem?? like i said previous, it is due a service so oil, oil filter and plugs will be changed car has 63k on the clock incase you was wondering and i presume MAF is original. Car has standard air box with panel filter and bailey dump valve.

Thanks for your comment, much appreciated

OK, might have misread this a bit first time round. So you're saying that once the engine's warm, you can pull up at lights or wherever, and it revs just fine? The problem only happens from a standstill and when the engine's completely cold? If that's it, I would check the plugs for signs of overfuelling (or ask your mechanic for a look at the old ones when he swaps them), get the service done, put the original dump-valve back on and see how the car runs after that.

A MAF problem would normally show even once the engine's warm, but yours might just be starting to go.

Ok Mark thanks for that will have a look when i get chance, how do i check the MAF buddy? As for the dump valve i dont have the original one this is how i got it, ive owned it 9 months and it first started doing it in the bad winter we've just had! but now seems to be doing it all of the time! Could the MAF just want a clean?

Yup, agree with that, sounds like the classic symptoms of a coolant temp sensor failure.

It is situated in the large aluminium water pipe that runs under the inlet manifold from left to right (the top hose from the radiator connects to it).

Unfortunately, I think you will find that you have the early set up and the sensors will be on the rear face of the pipe facing the intercooler. This will mean that the intercooler will have to be removed to gain access.. Be careful here, as the large black pipe running from the turbo to the intercooler can be a pain to remove & it becomes brittle over time so care is needed when trying to persuade it.

There are 2x sensors sat next to each other, 1 has a single wire and this one operates the temp guage in the instrument binicle. the other should be a brown sensor with two wires, this is the one you are interested in as it tells the ecu how hot/cold the engine is and adjusts fueling accordingly.

The part number for this sensor is 22630AA041

Currently £39.96 from a dealer, but you may get a better deal from the likes of:

http://www.importcarparts.co.uk/parts.asp

or

http://www.scoobyparts.com/

You may even be lucky and find one on e-bay, just stay away from the second hand ones
and make sure its the two wire type, as the later ones are 3 wire, grey in color and won't fit your car's wiring harness

Steve............Took my car over to Stewart at Surrey Saburu Specialists and he's diagnosed the Crank Sensor. He said they normaly work or dont, but thats what fault code it's brought up. Hope to get one and have it fitted next week. I'll let you know if this works
