Unhappy Big end failure

I live in South Africa & own a 1997 STI (Japan import).
The car was sent in to have the speed limiter (180kph) removed.
Whilst it was being run on the dyna it developed a knock. When the engine was stripped one of the big-ends was found to have failed.
The engine was perfect before.
Do you have to remove the rev limiter when you remove the speed limiter?
Would be glad to hear from anyone who has had a similar experience.

No connection, it's more likely to do with fuel quality.

IMHO

If they were testing to see if it was removed and taking it upto to high speeds on the dyno, were the dyno fans upto the job

Yeah, were they trying to max it out? If so for how long?

As above, were there big fan/s positioned right in front of the bonnet, with a low horizontal board deflecting the airflow through the front maw/grille/bonnet scoop?

What did the outfit say when they/you realised the bottom end had gone?!

When the convertor is in place it simply gears down (slows) the speedo needle by a factor of x0.621, so that it now reads in MPH (rather than KM/H) This means that the top speed limiter - previously coming in at 180KM/H (112MPH) - now happens at 180MPH (which you'll never reach ).

Do a bit of a search and you'll find quite a few classic engines have let go when folks are doing top speed runs or prolonged high speed. IIRC it was something to do with poor oiling of the cranks at high speed and rpm (due to the crank design on earlier engines). Hopefully someone will confirm.

Get a new crank, some ACL Race bearings and you should be good to go ... you might want to stroke it to 2.1 at the same time if funds allow.

Thanks for all your responses. Our fuel here only 95 octane. This is probably the reason but will ask the garage about the dyno. Not sure I'll get an honest answer through....

fair play, you lot got through. great cross and good goal. you looked a bit skitish in the last 10 mins though.

not a great team. none of the other 3 teams in the groups were great. germany will be another matter though. what does it feel like to be beaten to the top spot in the group by a country that calls it soccer. i thought you englanders invented america

i will still get more than 180 out of my engine though

I agree.

England are merely a "good" side. Nothing more. Nothing less. They can be world-beating on their day. But that's their Achilies heel - they don't produce enough world class performances to be taken "seriously" (you only have to look at their start to the WC). They lack that last 10% of 'Latin-esque' natural flair on the ball, which I believe you MUST have to get through to a tournament final.

The problem we have is our fickle media. I wish they'd just acknowledge that they aren't the TEAM they would have you believe. In our oh so desperate desire to win a major, the commentators go apesh1t about the side - it's hugely embarrassing.
