Default speed sensor(electric type)

hi , my speedo has stopped working in my 98 car(import) i have been told its speed sensor, car still revs above 4500rpm, so dont think its in limp mode, i have tried another dash ,but still nothing...
is there any way to check the sensor before i buy one...

thanks

If the speed sensor had gone, it would be in limp mode, so from this you can deduce that the sensor's still good and the problem's elsewhere.

Does your car have a speedo converter in so it reads in mph rather than km/h? If it does, first thing I would check is whether one of the connections to it has failed.

car won't fail m.o.t if speedo in.op, as it's not a testable item
as for the speed sensor i'd defo make sure it's that before you buy one as they aer about £100

was told by the MOT centre it will fail if they dont see the speedo move, it may be different here in N ,IRELAND. as we have government run centres over here, and you get it done in a garage type centre.
