Question Power Steering Relocation Kit.......

anyone with one of these fitted, do you find that the pump makes a wining noise like it is low on fluid when you first start up for 1 min or so?

i have tried it with different levels of fluid in the tank, also with a 1mm hole in the cap.

with the hole, fluid was just pushed out of it.

i have been told that i might need a bigger bore pipe from the tank to the pump. the bore size at the mo is same as oe size.

here are some pics of my set up in my project thread

https://www.scoobynet.com/764865-v6-...-so-far-4.html

or anything lese you could recomend?

thanks
ian

What size is the pipe from pump to reservoir ? the newage p/s reservoir sits in a similar position to yours & uses what looks like 1/2 inch pipe.

It's deff smaller than 1/2 inch. I'll make the adapter off the pump to that size and increase the pipe as well

It could be a bit of air in the system, when you relocated it did you start the car with the fluid tank cap off, whilst filling it up you should turn the steering from lock to lock untill it pushes all the air out (it bubbles abit) then when fluid level is at the correct level and its stopped bubbling put the cap back on and turn the car off. See if that helps

once it has been a couple of mins, the pump noise goes, and after i have been for a drive and the engine is off, the is pressure in the tank, you can hear it hiss when you undo the cap

If you have someone to borrow for a min then take the cap off start it up and get someone to turn the wheel from lock-lock and you watch and see if it pushes any air out.

Sorry it didnt resolve the problem but worth a go, i cant see the pipe size being the problem myself as its usualy fine on the standard size. Again worth a try.

Is it not draining the pump of fluid because the return to the reservoir is lower than the pump?

had a think about this, and dont think it will, as both pipes in the tank are under the fluid

I had a think about what micky said and he is correct, because your return from resevoir to pump is lower than the pump when you turn the car off the fluid is draining back to resevoir so then the pump is having to fill up again when you start it, hence why its whining for a couple of mins untill it fills up.

You need to mount your resevoir higher, thats why the standard item sits on top of the pump so it stays full.

Thats should sort it

I see what your saying actualy, ive not had to relocate myself due to being rotated setup. Maybe its still got air in it then, im at abit of a loss with this now, you might be better off speaking to someone like mark from lateral or rcm or even alan at engine tuner and see what they suggest buddy.

Hope you get it sorted

Not sure how many classic owner have swapped to the newage set up Ian. However, from memory, the newage reservoir is sited higher that you have yours fitted.

That could also be a load of bollox, as Neil... on 22B has relocated his reservoir, as seen in the pic below. Picture from this thread

I had some pretty odd noises and unusually stiff steering for the first couple of runs after I re-located mine (MY96 turbo wagon), but it only lasted around a day, as I remember. I've got no air-con, so I had a convenient empty space for the bottle just to the right of the alternator. It's not far off the original height, which probably isn't a bad thing.

Reason for relocation was to finally get rid of the dreaded persistent leak from the round pump-mounted bottle, and parts used were a remote fitting and bottle from two random 4x4s at the local scrappy.
