Default TMIC + Strut Brace = Knocking

Finally managed to locate an annoying knocking thats been coming from my car for a long while. Usually only happened at low speeds, if I was in a high gear, or when I got the dreaded clutch judder (MY00 UK by the way).

It was the standard TMIC knocking onto the strut brace, so much, thats the top of the TMIC has worn away some of the alloy strut brace.

Now I'm glad the knocking has gone, but I'd still like a strut brace. I also have the Carl Davey TMIC riser kit on, to lif the top of the TMIC into the airflow more.

I'm thinking I have these options:

1. Strut brace with some foam insulation on the point of contact.
2. Strut brace without TMIC riser kit.
3. Strut Brace with stiffer engine and gearbox mounts, to stop the TMIC moving.
4. Strut brace but possibley shorten the TMIC slicone hosing, to bring it away from the brace.
5. No strut brace at all.

I don't ike the idea of removing thse mods, no matter how small there benefit is. So I just wondered if anyone had any advice on what to do about it.

If the 'riser kit' you are using is causing the intercooler to foul the brace then dump the riser kit. If you haven't already then get an intercooler splitter for the scoop, those riser kits are pointless anyway in comparison, as the biggest problem with the topmount is that incoming air is forced to the back of the intercooler and the effectiveness of the front portion of the intercooler is reduced.
Check out Zerosports for a decent splitter, I think David Hendry cars (or something Hendry) are the importer here.

Yeah maybe I should take the riser kit off and try it that way. I will look into a splitter, I already have the zerosports rad splitter, so would be nice to get the IC one.

In what condition is your 'dogbone' stabiliser behind your intercooler.Any play here would highlight the knocking too!

Aye pitch stop, remove risers or use a bit of samco on the offending area.

Is that the engine mount part under the IC?
Will check it out as I have been meaning to look at all my mounts and bushes as the the gear changes are a bit jerky.

Didn't know you could get them. Sounds expensive anyway.

Thanks for the replies. Samco instead of foam would be better for the knocking I suppose.

not expensive, picked mine up for £22 delivered as i fitted a bigger 2003 TMIC to my 95 classic, guaranteed not to hit then, the foam/hose may work for a time, but will probably rub thru in the end

JPP do have one but I think the design makes them fairly ineffectual if I am honest...not a criticism but I think you would be better looking at mounts...

http://www.japperformanceparts.co.uk...p?ID=100863811

Pitch stop is the engine/box to firewall, engine mounts are underneath either side L&R.

Mark at Lateral sells the STi Grp N mounts which are better than the HardRace regardless of how cheap they might be.

Replaceing engine mounts in a classic makes a massive difference as the old ones will be quite worn and sloppy.
