Default oil smells of petrol

when i take the oil filler cap off im sure i can smell petrol what might cause this??

im no expert but as above that sounds like piston rings are goosed.

There's a thing called "bore washing" that happens if your are running rich. Are you mid way through mods and need a remap?

done a few mods nothing dramatic though and yes had an open source remap so all should be ok

Smell first off (will give you a clue) but you need to beg borrow or steal meter of some kind.

Also petrol in the oil would be a give away for me! This is bad coz it dilutes the oil.

Did you map it yourself?

+1 what fpan said.... that's the best way to asses it. You will end up with a graph of mixture versus revs so you can see if she runs rich or lean at various points on the map. Ideally should be a straight (ish) line. AFR = Air Fuel Ratio. Do a search for dyno runs and you'll see some examples.

But keep an eye on it in the mean time. Dont hammer it till you found the cause.

My oil used to smell after about 2500 miles on my old engine. It used to run really rich when cold. I could smell it through the headers (came into the cabin at low speeds) that were vented to atmosphere at the time.
