FAO: Classic with A/C owners
Hi all
Would someone who owns a MY99 UK Classic with air conditioning be kind enough to take some photos of their engine bay and post them/send them to me? I'm trying to plan retro-fitting of AC to my Classic and just want to get an idea before I take the job on.
I'm particularly looking for detailed (not not so close to blur the pics!) photos of any components associated with the A/C system, eg condenser with mountings, drier, pipework, compressor/bracket/belt, wiring loom/connectors.. the lot!

Ah right ok!!
I used to fit the factory kits for a Subaru main dealer.........if its the genuine kit etc the wiring loom is already there! Its just a case of plug in and go!
Im not sure but a may have an instruction manual at home in toolbox which i can forward on to you......ill have to have a look later for you!

How tricky is it a job? I've purchased a job lot of parts from someone, hopefully including every bracket and nut & bolt. Any parts of it a real pain in the ****? Is the dash prone to clips breaking when removing etc?

Im not promising ive got one but ill def have a look later for you.
It used to take me about 1.5 hours to install the kit but it was always one new cars and the customer had ordered the air con as an optional extra. Because yours is older you may have a problem with tight bolts etc but shouldnt be to much of a problem.
In the center console of the dash youll see a blanking plastic plate you need to remove this so you can fit the on/off switch.....you may have to remove the radio to access the two pin plug.
You have to remove the glove box so you can remove the heater fan so you can install the pipework etc.
Without looking at the car obviously its quite hard to describe what to do!!
The compresor fits next to the alternater.....again the plug is already there.....it should be tapped on to the wirring loom for the alternator. The compresor is easy to fit just make sure you have the extra belt and puley.
Oh and just check you have the fan which bolts next to the original one on the radiator.

No..........only the glove box!! once you have removed it you'll see the fun motor etc under the dash.....you have to remove that. And obviously the plastic blanking plate and the radio to access the plug.
You have to fit a couple of relays in the engine bay and a fuse.
I see you live in essex........i live in Worcester but if you need a hand etc ill be more than happy to help, if i cant find the instructions.

This isn't sounding as bad as I thought it'd be!
Do you have to remove the bumper or front panel to fit the condenser?
If you fancy a day out in Essex i'd be happy to pay as all my usual suspects have wimped out at the thought of doing this conversion!

No..... the front bumper and front panel stay in place......you only have to remove the grille.
If you undo the top brackets that hold the rad in place and push it back the condenser fits infront of the rad!
Would be eaier if you could come to sunny worcester as i have my tools here, and also a few bits and bobs that might help.
Is the aircon second hand cos if so there maybe a few nuts and bolts missing??
Also i cant charge the system that will have to be done by a garage etc cos i dont have the equipment to do this.......so i cant test for any leaks etc.
Was it working on the previous car??

Yes all the kit has been pulled off of a car. I've not received it yet but purchased from a member on this website. He assures me every last bit of the conversion will be included so hopefully that will be the case. I know how easy it is to miss a bolt or something though!
I should probably order up some new seals/o-rings for the pipes. Good news about the ECU!
Yes you're right, me coming to you would be the right thing to do. I could buy a can of gas from Halfords (if available) to at least test the system works somewhat, and then get it properly drained and re-filled by my local guy.
If you don't mind i'll drop you a PM once all the equipment has arrived to discuss. I'll check what's been included and will try to identify and buy in any parts I need to complete the conversion in advance.

I think......and i maybe wrong but the only way to test for leaks etc is to charge the system up and i dont think you can do this without the specialised equipment. We used to put a dye in the system so you could see where the leaks were and also a "sniffer" to smell out the leaks.
Would be good idea to order new seals etc just to be on the safe side.
