Default 2 questions 95 wrx

hello, after a couple of hours searching im a bit more lost , so i would appreciate some advice.

problem 1 ,
after motorway or fruitful driving i get oil burning on my manifold (at the front under cam cover). would the steering pump cause this?(have to top it up once a week) and if so why doesnt it do it at low speeds or tickover? or is it more likely to be crank seals/ oil pump even tho i dont have to top up the engine oil??

problem 2 ,
im getting hesitation and loss of performance on acceleration (and exhaust note changes to raspy) but only sometimes. so after some searching i decided it was the maf so gave it a good clean but still no better. also checked all vac pipes and boost pipes.so whats next? its frustrating because its only happens every now and again so you think its fixed and then it happens grrr.

Thanks in advance and great forum btw.

1. Probably a weeping cam cover gasket - common, esp. on driver's side. Reason it smells/smokes when ragged is the oil burning off on the very hot engine parts - mainly the headers, when it drips onto those.

2. Could be "anything" - hard to diagnose via forum, really.

Probably because 99.9% of the time, people post "rocker cover gasket..."

If power steering has to be topped up I'd say thats gonna be causing the oil your seeing at the front, I know mine leaked badly and caused smoke and stink etc.. also made a terrible whine it got empty. Apparently its an easy fix, just a little 'o' ring on the bottom of the resevoir. Although I wouldn't rule out the leaky cam cover gasket.

Yeah, bound to be either one.

I'd do the cheap PS res o-ring fix first (as it defo works) then give it 2 weeks or so to see if the problem goes away (takes time for it to completely burn off).

If still present, suspect cam cover gasket... or maybe some perished oil breather hose/s???

ok thanks for the replys. today i replaced the 2 o-rings on the power steering tank. so hopefully problem solved. but what a numb design i undid the 3 bolts then pissed the contents of the tank all over the engine and manifold grrrr.
