Default Too much oil question

I have just had car serviced last week, so just checked oil on drive(flat) when cold and its reading high! I would say about the same distance between low and high up again! I know I need to get some out but could this have caused damage up to now??

Cheers

Just to be sure you're reading it correctly:-

- Bottom full hole: MIN for stone COLD oil reading (c.3.5L in sump/filter)

- Top full hole: MAX for stone COLD oil reading (c.4.5L in sump/filter)

- Higher semi-circlular notch, further up in side of dipstick: MAX for expanded HOT oil reading

It's not good but, without knowing the actual level right now, fingers crossed won't have done any damage.

How high, exactly, is the current level? Is it above the notch in the side of the dipstick?

The least thing this suggests is that whoever you got to service your car needs a thorough slap for being so clumsy. I doubt it's worth even asking whether they'll have followed the optimal procedure for changing the oil if they can't even get the quantity remotely right.

fingers crossed there is no damage but you really need to drain the excess out ASAP.

IMO the engine will be fine, now that youve caught it early.

Did you take the reading when hot or cold?

If hot, then hopefully it's overfilled by 'only' <500ml or so (as that distance represents c.1L, when COLD). If you took it when cold, then you do indeed prob have around 1L extra in there

Yeah, prob the best idea.

Make sure you/they disconnect the crank sensor before cranking over...

This is a simple way to get oil out and only £13.99. I use it to change oil on my track (kit, not Subaru) car where getting the undertray off is a pain.

What damage does a high reading cause?

too much oil means high pressure's reading, it will put stress on bearing, no good.
