Filter = Subaru Genuine, oil, any quality full synth in the 5w/40 to 15w/50 arena will be fine. Mobil 1 Motorsport 15w/50 or Millers 10w/50 would be personal recommendations/uses.

There's a thread or two round here about how to change the oil on these cars. Worth an hour or four of your time before you start.

...with the emphasis well and truly on circa 4 hours, rather than a paltry 1!

Given the accessibility of the bits, in many ways changing the oil on these is easier than an Escort. However there are one or two extra steps that you can take that only add a couple of minutes to the job but have the potential to save you some grief down the line.

Look for the "Oil Change Questions" thread further down and everything you want to know will be answered. Get yourself a drink before you get stuck in.

Make sure you read through to its conclusion. Then you'll know what to 'believe' and not what to. Pay particular attention to API David's and Spitpin's own comments/advice. It just may... may... save you a potential engine failure...

Blimey, ironic indeed. Did they spring for the engine change then, or expect you to pay for it? How old was (and how much mileage) on the car at the time?

Yeah, that's pretty much the bottom line. It mitigates a possible risk and has no downside - bar, possibly, a bit of extra wear on your starter motor.

As for the silly questions, it doesn't do any harm when they get asked, cos then whoever happens along afterwards and reads the thread will see the answers.

Your 5l can will give you what you need plus some extra for topping up, should it be necessary.

Don't forget to start filling the filter before you do anything else as it takes a while (and a couple of top-ups) for the element to saturate. Then when you come to refilling the sump, bung just over 3 litres in and then start checking the level on the stick. Fill it up to the top hole (not the notch) and then do the crank sensor thing.

That will normally give you a settled level about an eighth of an inch below the top hole when cold, which is about spot-on.
