Depends on what your aiming to achieve really..... If your happy with how the car's current performance is then stay with the top mount... The only down side I see with a FMIC is the amount of cutting to the front bumper on the Impreza..... But the power gains are worth the hassle of the fitting one.
Thats my opinion I'm just waiting to order my FMIC.

If your looking for sensible power on the standard turbo, standard injectors then no, top mount will be fine. can you not swop the WRX I/C for the STI I/C,???? Don't forget you will have to have the car remapped or tweaked to really feel the benefit.

1. How far are you going ? 400 bhp then yes.
2. An STI IC is a bolt-on mod capable up to 400 bhp. easy to find and quite cheap.
3. With your std. turbo it will most likely be laggy if you fit an FMIC, an STI turbo and a re-map will help fill that gap.
4. Can you insure it with all that on ?
If yes then off you go !
All IMHO.

I have :
STI Injectors
STI TMIC
VF34 turbo
3" decat (and downpipe) system - straight through from turbo
Remap (ecutek)
Upgraded Panel filter
Fuel pump
Total so far - about £4.5k
This will get you to 350-360 depending on how your car reacts.
Anything beyond this starts to get very expensive - uprated gaskets, oil pump, pistons, crank, cams, clutch and suspension etc. The standard gearbox won't take much more than this, so to upgrade to 6Speed box then needs new diff ....
You have to ask yourself - is it worth the £8k spend - just sell up and get an STI and start from there
However, if you want a good, quick WRX, throw money at it but be realistic with your expectations.

If you are wanting to get to 350BHP, then there's no point in a FMIC in my opinion. I have an 06WRX and have spent a fair bit of cash to get it there.
