Default What belt is this?

Hi all,
having a look around my engine today before a journey and found a belt off, chewed up etc
it was on the pulley next to the alternator
also noticed directly below it on a bracket,a chewed up mess.I don't know if it's a tensioner or what as it's too badly damaged
this pic is at an angle but this is it.

is it the aircon belt?
Is it a tensioner?
Thanks

Thats the timing belt cover, i would remove the covers just to make sure no damage behind there, could lead to a new engine if debris gets into the cambelt.

With the old belt removed can I still drive the car? Should be ok as long as I don't use the aircon right?

Yes, although if, as you say above, the timing belt cover has been cut right through, it would be worth making at least temporary repairs to stop dirt, rainwater etc getting inside the timing area. Longer term, depending on how bad that damage is, you might be better off replacing the affected part.
