Default Oil Temperature Issue

Just recently picked up a 2006 Hawkeye STI with GGR conversion and the car came with a couple of Deif gauges fitted including the Oil Temperature one. Now, it wasnt connected when I first got the car but all it required was plugging back in to the back of the link controller thing. Problem is, either the car runs very hot ~ 130 to 150deg C or there may be an issue with the gauge / sensor. How hot do they normally run, should I get another sensor to try out or get the car checked out itself. Sorry if this dosent make much sense.

Thanks for the reply, wasn't sure if this was classed as running hot or not or if there is an issue with the temp or the gauge.

If you are handy drop the sensor into boiling water and see if it is reading correctly...

P.S. I've never seen over 115 degrees on mine on track without an oil cooler.

That is HOT! My UK car used to run at 85-90 degrees all day, with 100 or so seen on "spirited" runs

When the engine destroyed itself, due mainly to heat soak, the oil temperature rose to 120 degrees.

Those temps are definately NOT OK if they are true.
Are these temps when giving it some welly for a while or juts at idle?
I didn't see much more than 105 deg C in the summer and at that point I ease off. An oil cooler will be added this summer.
On a std STi 06, you should see IRO 90-95 deg C when it some effort.

I'd double check with another gauge & sensor first, but if true then the oil is not going to be helping for very long.
What pressures do you see at these temps and at what revs?

Nick

I dont have a oil pressure sensor. The highest was at teh weekend and that was on a cruise at say 80mph for 10 miles and the temp was at 130deg ish and rose to 150deg after a 5 minute back road drive. If I drive offboost in traffice for 15 minutes it will rise to 130deg and not drop. Will get the sensor out and check it. Where's the most likely place its fitted, oil filter plate or somewhere else.

Those temperatures are huge in my opinion.

I used to always be in the 95 deg C when driving normally, and it swiftly rose to 100/110 when pushing on. So I've now got an oil cooler fitted.

I would make sure your sensor definitely works properly, like the hot water trick already suggested

Will have a look tonight and see if i can find it. Had a little drive at lunch time for 10 minutes, temp rose to 90deg and stayed there for a while then crept up to 130deg, hope it's just the sensor.

Sorry mate but either your guage is in degrees F, it is goosed or you have serious problems.
OIL BREAKS DOWN AT 140C.
Follow Dunx advice and check out your guage or ask someone competant to do so.
Deal with this urgently or you may need a new engine.
