Default WR1 Standard Internals

Guys and ladies,

quick question if i may..... Standard internals on a WR1.... What power is the limit they will take?

Considering my options at the moment...

All the best and thanks in advance

The internals on a WR1 are exactly the same as those on a normal UK/EU STI, they are capable of over 400bhp with supporting modifications.

How much further than 400 brake do you think would be safe though? im a little concerned they will let me down and obviously dont want to make it an over sight.

430-450bhp is deemed safe, 500 is deemed time to consider a rebuild before it ejects a rod.
Note that with any engine, it can let go with less than these figures or more than these figures.

Cheers Tony, appreciate your input. 430-450 was the figure I had in my head but i do appreciate what your saying re engines letting go at different figures, It will obviously be adversley effected by how you drive it aswell.

Trying to way up a viable option as im seeking bigger power shortly, was thinking Manley rods, Wiseco pistons, cometic/cosworth gaskets, ARP head studs, ACL race bearings/rod bearings.

Toying with what i "actually" need and what "would be nice".... Probably going to be looking at 450-470 bhp....

Thanks again Tony

Most of the aftermarket brands of forged pistons and rods claim to be able to handle, as a minimum, around the 500bhp mark - whether Wiseco, Manley, Cosworth, Wossner, Omega, and others.......

Oh and ARP head studs (going 14mm might be worthwhile at the level you're talking?), plus ACL "Race Series" mains and bigs as a matter of course, as you say...

As a pointer, ZEN's last 'green' TA car had a pic'n'mix of stuff. That car 'reliably' ran around 700bhp!!! See here for its full spec:-

The STi 8 engines are tough engines compared to many others. I think Simon at JGM is running near enough to 450. There is another member on hear who has been running near to 550 for 2 years with regular track days

Im hearing you guys maybe, but its nice to know your engine is safe(r) i think i may struggle to enjoy it if i was concious of the engine that would be my issue?

I do understand your concern as its all about personal preference & piece of mind. However if i was in your shoes i would not hesitate to push the standard block upto about 420-430 & thrash it once or twice a week within its limit. Its all about the mapping & im sure someone like Simon or Bob Rawle would do a top job of it whilst retaining the safety. It also depends on how you drive for example if you do regular high sustained speeds then safety would be an issue. Regular servicing is a must.

Yeah agree, mapping will be key too. I very rarerly use the wr1 i have a civic type r as my daily drive so it wouldnt get much abuse at all really. So perhaps I could run the risk of the standard setup innitially and perhaps forge it when im looking to go beyond 450...

You never know, the std block may well give you some decent milage before it goes bang. Then, seeing, as you'd rebuild it whether beforehand or when it goes, then you have time to "dripfeed" savings for the rebuld in the meantime! Win-win IMO.

If you get it built before "trying it out", you could be "wasting" potential performance-on-the-cheap, prior to the motor dying, IYSWIM?

What does IYSWIM stand for lmfao!

Yeah you have a decent point, it would be beneficial not to blow 10k on the car in a oner as im sure anyone could appreciate... drip feed sounds far more ammicable lol.

Woza, you shouldnt have changed the top mount, the standard ones are one of the best out there waste of money otherwise but your going to need a bigger turbo, injectors, possably a fmic, depends on how you want to do it but the standard STI top mount is good for 400+bhp (just look at the type 25's ) though your looking at a new turbo really if you want decent power.

Woza, you must change the turbo mate. Top mount may become restrictive over 400 brake though IMO.

Bigger injectors 650-700, a decent ECU as after 380-400 ECU tek may struggle.

JD thanks for your reply mate, will go without forging for now i think. Very looking forward to this now, cant wait to feel the power

JD out of interest what are the brembos like with the extra power, or have you changed your setup?

cheers

My old bus only managed to reach 390-ish, and is fine with Performance Friction discs and pads at the front and PF pads on OEM discs at the rear.

Yatesy tried a big top mount on his STI @ Scoobyclinic, but he replaced his std TMIC as had got less det. out on the road, we think due to the bigger IC being cooked by the turbo...

Ecutek will cope with over 400 bhp, but needs help with the boost control (Apexi AVC-R)....

IMHO

dunx

P.S. At 360 ft.lb's my std clutch cried enough.....

Yeah agree, poor poor clutch lol.

Weighing up my options with the clutch, I had an AP on p1 which was tops, dont know whether i need something a tad more meaty to take 450 or so.
