Default So i was being an idiot in front of my friends and...

thought i would try show off in my Subaru as a joke, neutral about 6000 RPM dropped the clutch and usually it just grips and blasts off, but this time it just made a grinding noise and then gave out a lovely smell. Now i'm assuming the smell was the clutch but why did it slip! When i got home i did a few more low rev ones (4000 RPM) to see if it did it again but it was fine.

Could it not be the clutch and be the diffs?

Thanks

I'm going to keep that as one of the worse possible situations lol, as for now i'm going to assume i lifted the clutch too slowly therefore grinding the clutch at extremely high RPM, even though i'm pretty sure my foot was off the clutch ha. I'll wait till it stops working then get a new clutch and 6 speed trans!

Thanks

If you'd damaged gear teeth, diffs or driveshafts you'd still be able to hear it. If you can't hear anything wrong now then about the only remaining explanation is a particularly noisy and unpleasant type of clutch slip. As to why it did it, probably because you sidestepped it rather than feeding it in with a little more finesse.

Unless of course there's oil on it or similar. The only way to know would be to take the gearbox off and have a look.

Can clutches just slip though even if in full working order?

Thanks

Of course. If you're ham-footed, and/or if the torque capacity of the clutch is a little too close to the amount your engine produces, or if there's oil contamination, or if the spring's a little weaker than it should be, or if...

As above, if it was anything else, you'd know about it due to the clicking/banging/clanking noise your car would have been making ever since.

That's good.

I've been a little over-exuberant, shall we say, and launched a few times at Elvington at circa 6000 rpm. Wheelspin, grip and go.

Concrete is probably more forgiving on the transmission than tarmac.
