Default Engine oil & dearbox/diff oil grade...

Have just purchased a 1998 uk turbo, unsure of if it has an LSD or not?

Anyway, from a glance through the owners manual, i understand that 10w30 in winter and 10w40 in summer would be the ideal way to go....but NOT 5w30?

And both gearbox and diff need GL5 75w90?

Can anyone confirm this?

Sounds right.

I would find a 5w-50 for all year use. Like Valvoline VR1, Mobil 1..

Valvoline Synpower is the absolute best for a Subaru gearbox. Smooth , crunch-free shifts!

The centre and rear diffs are effectively 0-100% LSDs. They are viscous coupling types. The front diff is a regular open 'free' diff.

I think a 10W-40 or 10W -50 are the recommended weights for your car. Can't go wrong with Silkolene Pro S or Millers CFS in these weights. Fully synth oil stays in grade for longer, so protects the engine's/turbo's bearings more, between oil change service intervals.

And yeh the gear/diff oil is a 75W-90 weight. A favoured one is Castrol Syntrax ( I think it's called "Syntrax"?)

I have a My00 classic and use Silkolene 10w-50 Fully sythetic for engine and Castrol Syntrax 75w-90 for gearbox/diff. I got all mine from opieoils.

Think you will find the standard classic Impreza are open front and rear, LSD centre only.

On my MY97's I run 10w40 semi all year.
Gearbox 75w90
Rear diff 80w90
As per my understanding of the manufacturers recommendations for unmodified UK Scoob.

Hope this helps

Non DCCD Classics have a VC at the rear, as well as the centre.

OOPs, quite correct. Don't know why I wrote that it wasn't. Just finished 48 hours this week so obviously not thinking straight. Thanks for the correction.

I think i'm going to go for some millers semi synth....its half the cost of fully synth, but i know from using it before thats it some incredibly runny oil.

Only other thing on this service is coolant.....normal pink stuffs ok i take it?

Think you want the blue/green type for coolant

The easiest way is just to colour match it with what's already in there.

As for oil, a 10w-50 like Pro S or Millers CFS is ideal, but if you want a cheaper option the Millers semi 10w-40 will be fine, but you'll need more regular changes.

Cheers

Tim
