Default newbi help/questions please

hi guys have just joined the site.Im from a 200sx background originally, i drive in the British drifting championship but am about to purchase a 2004 shape wrx estate as my everyday car and have some questions for you experts which i would appreciate some help with. first question is the estate much different at handling to the saloon ? what is the standard boast ? what boast level can be used safely with the standard top mount ic ? i pressume it runs 444c injectors as standard ? are there any common problems to look out for on purchasing ? whats the standard exhaust width and flow like( is an upgrade needed for usefull performance under 320bhp ? whats the general thoughts on the estate wrx

Thanks for your time and any help would be much appreicated

Tom

Hi and welcome. Not sure about handling compared to saloon. In terms of power, WRX has a TD04 turbo which produces around 0.8 bar boost. The top mount IC is good for around 350bhp ( I have been told my many mappers). Yes it has 440 injectors and the exhaust is a 2.5" system.
The car will produce 225bhp as standard, presume no prodrive pack. I wouldn;t go for the prodrive but get the up pipe and downpipe changed to remove the cats and to pas MOT go for a 100cel sports cat. With a walbro fuel pump and a panel filter with a re-map you should see 280bhp.
ask around many tuners and mappers on here. I used JollyGreenMonster for re-mapping.

280 is very acheiveable with moderate mods. with 30k miles it obviously will not be that tired. i was remarking on the 350 hp with a top mount. you would be surprised at the number of people who come on here with a 93 wrx circa 120k miles and want 350 hp just like that.

as has been said with a downpipe, fpr, new ecu and remap, you could see 280 without very much outlay. alot of people are using ecu-tec, others seem to rate the new simtek ecu because of the little extras you can add (knock correction, anti-lag and launch control).

there are no gauruntees here. an engine that is run out of spec can still go pop, but as long as you get someone who knows what they are doing when it comes to either modification or mapping you should be ok.

I would hate to say dont fit a walbro and it being the weak link. For £70 it is worth it.

Std Newage WRX TMIC is fine for everything that the standard turbo can throw at it - same with injectors.

A full decat, panel filter and remap will see you around the 280 mark.

To go beyond that you could decat the up-pipe for a little more but for the hassle of doing that I would only do if changing turbo for a bigger one VF35 or VF35 or VF43 etc but you would then need 550 injectors and probably an STi TMIC to get the best from that set up. Should see you 330bhp ish on the VF35, 340-350 on the VF34 and 350-360 ish on the VF43.
