help needed,advice on engine
hi
last week my scooby died on me, i have spoke to two garages and both have advised me that it would be cheaper to replace engine rather than strip down replace and rebuild. i dont have much idea on what im doin so i could do with some advise on what engine will fit, where best to get one from and where to get fitted(am i best goin for specialist or would any garage be able to do it). I am in bedfordshire.
I have a W reg turbo 2000 UK, engine code is EJ205NW2KD. ive seen a few engines about but not sure if they will fit as ive been told that some may not fit the gearbox!!
Any advice would be much appreciated as im pretty much in the dark with this! any other information that may be needed to help please ask, i apologise now for my idiocy now
thanks for looking mike

and a rebuild woudl be better int he long run or a brand new bottom end as if you but a second hand unti you just dont now how long it will last and how it has been treated and igf it goes pop then your back to square one with more labour cost and another second hand engine and as above how did it die

You would need to fit a like for like engine, ie another MY99/00 engine (phase 2) and not a phase 1 or 1.5 engine.
As above, what happened to the engine? they dont just "die" without a cause, that will leave you where your next course of action is, refurbed/2nd hand engines are a mine field, in most cases your going to end up costing yourself more in the long run so if your engine is still in good internal condition it will be best to have it rebuilt by someone who knows what they are doing

Basically I was driving at 20mph turning a corner(no heavy driving involved) there was a cracking noise and what sounded like something was dragging. The engine starts but on idol it sounds bad enough, the recovery driver drove it on2 the back of the truck so it drove but the sound was not nice, there was no smoke whatsoever straight after or even now. A mechanic started the engine and told me to turn it off straight away, obviously he couldn't tell what it was without stripping it but could have been a bolt or a bearing had broke/dropped etc. He said it sounds like it's running on 3 cylinders. This is way past my knowdledge of cars so I'm going on what he's told me.

The car has done 79k cam belt was done 4 months ago. I've been quoted by 1 garage £2.5-£3k for a recon engine fitted with 12 months warrenty. Would a rebuild come close or pass that price obviously it's hard to say when not knowing the problem just wondering if u may have had any past experiences!!
Another place is offering a complete recon engine for £1400 then fitting costs on top, really not sure what to do

Look at someone like API in Coventry, recon engines are a nightmare, warranties on these are as good as toilet paper, or what you put on them!
Atleast with a rebuild you know whats going in there (well with a good engine builder) and some uprated parts wont cost you much more (the uprated x drilled/nitrided crank for instance and acl race bearings plus pistons and rods), better than a recon wreck
Tony
PS, avoid SMR engines at all costs

3 grand is enought to forged the engine and if the crank is ok that will be plenty dont recon, forge it, or you can buy a brand new bottom end for 2000 grand and stay away from smr engines speak to api or any other subaru tuner or vene engine tuner he could do you a nice 2.1 stroker for that sort of dollar
