Default Hybrid TD4 onto WRX Hawkeye has anyone on here done it?

Has anybody installed a Andy F hybrid TD4 turbo on their 2.5L WRX Hawkeye.
I would like to know your thoughts and results etc.
Main questions are,
How different is the Hybrid turbo in driving sensation?
Does the turbo look standard from the outside.i.e would SUbaru dealer notice any differences?
If your getting a very fast spool up and higher boost at lower revs your mpg must suffer on general driving around and motorway use etc?
Advise appreciated.

Christ, a 2.5L will make the AF Hybrid TD04 spool-up like hell! One helluva 'urban' road car...

If you'd be happy with a max of 290-310 or so, then I'd defo fit it!

Thing is, most people when they start modding, get used to the power and crave more! If you're one of those people, then I'd suggest a MD321 instead - either the H or the T, depending on whether you want circa 400 or 450 (the limit of your STi "v.9" TMIC...)

Or you could fit the S206, and it can be mapped to run anywhere between 400-500 - without having to change turbos! Best to run the S206 from c.450+ though, to make the most of what it can offer...

You would not just need a new turbo then but a forged bottom end, new gearbox and clutch.

i was starting to think that aswell, not to sure when the hawkeye wrx starts to top out, but the bug/blob eye it is usually about 360bhp the gearbox, clutch etc starts to give way.

Not after much more bhp as this will lead to more expense.
300 ish is enough.
I want Andy to map the car, I currently have PPP but to make the mapping worthwhile was tempted by the turbo.

I know! I know!

I left that out as I'm sure the OP would already know all about that side of things - I was just concentating on his turbo question....

In that case - go for ti! It's surely got to be the quickest spooling <300 option on the Scoob!!!

All I can say my hawkeye has a Jgm remap and full decat!! It made 285bhp and 345lb/ft torque!! Its plenty quick enough for me just using the standard Td04 turbo. By the time you would upgrade the turbo, add a 3 port solenoid, pay someone to do it and get it remapped and not forget about new brakes then you could be talking another 1500 - 2grand!! You could buy another car for that

the TD04 hybrid is very nice if you like quick spool.. should make 320bhp on that car I would expect.. trying to remember.. I know I have done one on a 2.2 and on a 2.5 but the 2.5 was in a classic not a hawkeye and the hawks AVCS heads will make it spool even sooner

physcially the turbo is the same size and shows no difference other than usually a gold actuator iirc.

I wish I wasn't (within reason and relatively modest means) a "bhp chaser"! 'Cause otherwise, one of these babies would get strapped on, no question lol...

Simon, assuming suitable headers/upipe etc, at what sort of rpm would you expect the AF TD04 to make full boost on a 2.0/WRX v.1 heads?

And also for the OP's benefit - what rpm for his 2.5?

It appears standard from the outside so the dealer can't tell

I would normally map the wastegate progression limits and boost target to be progressive with throttle position, ie 0-20% throttle = minimum boost for maximum economy, then rising progressively so 50%throttle = 0.8 bar boost, 70% = 1.0bar and rising to anything over 90% throttle = full boost.
This also makes them nicer to drive than standard and more controllable on a slippery surface.

Thanks for the replies.
In the process of getting the turbo etc.
Will keep you posted on how it goes.

I hope I do not comprimise the mpg for general driving around (when the wife uses the car during the week), as my original aim was to just get the mapping to make the car more efficient and improve mpg as I believe its running pretty rich, but maybe I have got a bit carried away!
Shame no one else has tried this set up on here.

An exiting prospect though!

It will be optimised for fueling (leaned out) for the part-throttle parts of the map - so you should notice a definite improvement, if you think yours is currently not all that.

So if you have a 'meek' wife, then you should notice some good returns

I got my hawkeye WRX mapped to 290 with a milltek exhaust and panel filter, so there's lot's of gain to be had with a remap without upgrading the turbo. As with scooby1929's comment, to me it seems like upgrading to a TD04 hybrid is a lot of effort for a small gain. I upgraded my turbo to a VF35 and got it mapped to 330: the internals, gearbox and clutch are coping fine. I'd suggest aiming for something like that rather than the relatively modest gains you'd get from the 04

I agree. Lot of time and effort for not much gain.

Put a vf43 on there and get 340-350 andmake it more worthwhile for less money.
