Default Both front brakes lock-up - cause?

Problem today in that my front brakes were staying on - noticed it when I took my foot off the accelerator and the car slowed down pretty quickly by itself without using the brakes. When I got out to have a look - smoke was coming from both (left/right) front wheels from brake pads. Smell was as you'd imagine

Wasn't so bad coming back to the house - but the brakes still didn't release as they should do when releasing the foot brake.

Any ideas what would cause both calipers/brakes to stay on?

Many thanks
Richard

Garage just phoned to say that the callipers, etc are all seized - need stripping down and new pads.

Seems weird though that both sides seized up at exactly the same time - any ideas on reason?

If the rubber boots are holed then all the salt they have been chucking around recently will have got in and corroded the pistons causing them to stick.

Happened to mine again this year. Having a mate in a machine shop knock me up a set of stainless ones so it don't happen again.

You can buy stainless pistons on ebay @ £135 a set for the 4 pots.

Thanks - makes sense.

Just the exact timing of both sides reaching crisis point during the same 15 minute drive seemed weird timing - though both wheels have been exposed to the same conditions. The car has been sitting around a lot - so lots of time for the salt to knacker things.

Would dirty brake fluid cause it too?

Dirty brake fluid certainly won't help as brake fluid is hygroscopic (absorbs water) so will probably corrode from the inside as well as out.

Good prices from Ian as usual.

Do you do stainless pistons and seals for the standard rear ventilated calipers UK MY99 (believe they are the same as the 2 pot front, correct me if I'm wrong) or a similar overhaul service?

Thanks Ian. Picked the car up from the garage where they have just stripped/cleaned the current callipers and put new pads on. However, I'll probably look to replace them later this year and will PM you nearer the time.

Cheers
Richard.
