Default going cold

hi just after a bit of help ,,,
1993 classic import
when i start the car on the drive temp is normal and heater blows warm
when i drive the car car temp goes down to cold and heater blows cold
sat in traffic it goes back to normal
no water loss and water is clean and antifreezed
i think the thermostat just after some advice and where is it ,,,

could be an airlock in the system,,, can be a fe-ker to get right.

i have had the car running ages with the top off header tank its sirculating ok ,,squeezed all the pipes and they are warm
its just when you drive it ,,,??????

Sounds like the thermostat might be missing, as mine was like that when i changed the engine. Where the bottom hose goes on the block there are 2 10mm bolts, undo them, take the pipe off the block and the thermostat should be there. Is like that on my newage, yours should be prob the same.

i just changed the engin it was imported from japan ,,,sounds like this is the prob ,,,thanks for telling me where it is i will look tomorow ,,,thanks alot

Yeah, I think the water pump/thermostat housing design is exactly the same for all Imprezas.

mine does exactly the same.......can i just confirm all of the models had the same thermostat? [mines a 96 wrx-sti]
and where do we get new stats from? genuine or aftermarket? etc

i have asked my local car parts shop and he can order them around 15 to 20 quid ,,,im in bradford west yorkshire ,,,some on ebay for around £15 ,,if i find cheaper i will let you know

Or, if your feeling flush, spend £60 on a Zero Sports one (from Lateral Performance and others). If these fail, they fail in the open position which is better than the other way round (ironically it seems that your OEM one may have failed in the open position anyway!!! lol).

Also the ZS one open 7 degrees earlier (at 71C compared to the OEM's 78), so average running temps will be slightly lower and more within the engine's efficient operating range.

I have one and it works beautifully. Ave temps are 83-86C. Nice.

And yes, AFAIK, all the stats are of the same 2-bolt pattern and fit in any MY's pump housing (certainly up til the pre-MY09 hatch; not sure if it changed for this MY?).
