Default Where has the throb gone on the S

Hi All,
I’m returning to Scooby ownership after 3 Years away, my previous was a 04 WRX prodrive, loved it but it had to go after 3 Years.
Yesterday I had a test drive in a WRX-S, nice car quick enough for me BUT!!!!
Where the hell has the signature Scooby throb gone???
So disappointed with the sound, or lack of the signature throb.
I’m so disappointed that I don’t think I’ll bother if there is no Scooby throb.

My question to WRX-S owners: what can be done; if anything to improve the way an S sounds, I don’t mind making a mod or 2.
Any advice will be appreciated.
Cheers.

There is no other options other than to fit a free flowing exhaust, decat/sports cat all the way.

not a prodrive exhaust a decent 1
there are plenty of aftermarket exhausts that all offer different noises and different levels of noise you just need to find people with different exhausts and have a listen

the 2.5l sounds different to the 2l
think it's to do with the headers!

It has to meet driveby noise regs, those nice pressure peaks that give the burble would fail, just need a more open exhaust (and please stop saying it needs a stainless as the car has that as standard - DOH!)

Ok…..Thanks it’s not as straight forward as fitting a boom boom Boy pipe.
Even the Guy from Subaru say’s (put’s on nerd voice) “well sir if you want a Scooby burble you have to spend 30k and get the STI 300”

Well sorry but the WRX-S is too sanitised and has lost the essence of Scooby and the signature tune of its sole. I want to get one, but not if it sounds like a Smart car

Unless there are S owners that know better? I live in hope.

That's not quite true. Only JDM cars have equal length headers and no burble. UK cars, irrespective of engine capacity, have unequal length headers that do produce the signature burble. You just need to remove the deresonator and get a decent back box to get a good sound. Of course a decat and/or sports cat will help and give better power delivery.

With the exception of the Spec C you'll also find that the newer the car the more sound deadening it tends to have too, giving a quieter in car ride.

Mikkel, Sounds interesting, I’m interested in the “Deresonator” removal where is it and how difficult is it to remove it? What’s the effect of removing it alone? I mean will its removal bring better harmonics?
Don’t mind investing in a sports Cat, bearing in mind a bit more poke is always welcome.
Sounds like there could be some hope

It's in the centre pipe of the exhaust on all newage cars as standard. Its job is basically to reduce noise. It can be replaced with a pipe like so: Impreza Turbo 2008 on : Subaru Impreza 2008 Hatchback Centre section

Take a look here for some more examples of exhaust systems for the new hatch model: Impreza Turbo 2008 on Exhaust :

Also, take a look on YouTube. Lots of videos of after market exhausts on 08 cars: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zaqkeoO6raY

It would be sad were it not, as pointed out, totally wrong.

The MANIFOLDS (this is a UK site as I recall -so why use American terms, or are you going to check under your hood now before removing a camera from your trunk to photograph the engine bay over the fenders?) are the same basic design as all previous scoobs, its only the JDM STi that has equal length twin scoll manifolds (and latest Legacy turbo's but that's an aside!)

Yes, I do apologise for using the americanism headers, but I assumed if I said manifolds as opposed to headers then my point may have been lost.

No need to apologise, the original usage of the abomination came from addison, I wasn't getting at you at all!

No subaru out of the box has a burble, the wrx-s is no exception and unless it has the ppp fitted it won't have had an exhaust upgrade either.

My previous was a 04 WRX 2.0 litre with prodrive fitted, it sounded so right.
The new WRX S has prodrive as standard but no burble.
Are we saying it’s all down to the new 2.5 engine, and not so much to do with the exhaust?
