Default PPP ecu.. Plug in and play?

If I get a ppp ecu for my 1998 uk turbo will I have to get the keys reprogrammed to the ecu? Has an aftermarket sterling alarm and immobiliser system on it, will this affect it?

Thanks

When you say your car is a "1998", what model year is it? If it's an MY97 or 98 (GC8E or GC8F), you will need some reprogramming done.

If it's an MY99 (GC8G), the PPP ECU is plug and go with no immobiliser trickery needed.

Yep, that's what it does without reprogrammed keys, or the transponders and immobiliser box that were partnered with the ECU.

Don't forget that the prodrive ECU is designed to work as part of a package consisting of

EcU
Back box
decat centre section
silicone Y pipe

and possibly a change of restrictor pill size, tho my MY97 works fine with the original.

Cheers guys. Looks like it will need reprogramming then. Any idea how much it would cost? Does it have to be done by a dealer?

Cheers

To answer your original question, assuming you have the earlier MY97/98.

If you buy the ecu with it's original immobiliser box (found by the drivers left knee) and transponder chip (in the key) then it is all plug and play. Have done this twice with our UK MY97s.

If you have only the ECU then it is a trip to Subaru, slap the ECU in and pay for the key transponder chips to be recoded to the Prodrive ECU. Downside is they won't work with your original ECU any more.

If you are friendly with your local scrappy they may sling you a couple of transponder chips from a scrapper so you can keep the original chips coded to your original ECU.

Asked at Subaru Peterborough last year and they quoted £45 plus VAT. Havn't found any one else but there must be people who do it.

Cheers mate thats perfect. Trip to the dealer it is as I only have the ECU. Will they still be able to reprogram it as it an aftermarket alarm system or is that going to cause problems?

Thanks

Can't see why an aftermarket alarm system should cause a problem. It may have it's own immobiliser but that will be deactivated by the fob, nothing to do with the transponder.

Good luck

By silicone Y pipe do you mean underneath the intercooler? Mines plastic but i have the rest of the kit on the car (it was from new, along with susp)

The standard item looks like

The aftermarket version of the Prodrive pipe looks like this

I believe the pipe in Andy's pic is the STI version which is equivalent to the Prodrive pipe (if not better)

The Prodrive pipe has a discreet logo that peeks out from under the intercooler in the engine bay

It is the original black pipe that is the problem. I replaced this with the blue samco one above before changing anything else and noticed an immediate improvement in spool up of the turbo, much less lag on the standard TD04. Downside (to some) can now hear the air being forced to the intercooler. Not loud but it is there, on mine anyway.

If you have a Prodrive ecu, decat and back box then is strange that you don't have the Y pipe. As said above they are designed to work as a package so a missing component must compromise the overall performance. Also as said above, the Y pipe by itself makes a difference. When I fitted the rest of the package there was one hell of a difference. Possibly more power, but the bum dyno can be fooled. Definitely quicker pickup from lower down the rev range, and oodles more torque. More hissing, spitting and farting in general. And a slight improvement mpg, tho on Tesco 99, not the 95ron I was running before the upgrades so havn't gained a significant saving.

Looks like the kiddy. The other pipes with it are superfluous.

Second hand Samco are about £30 on Scoobynet. Prodrive original around £50/60

The large short hose is for the front of the intercooler, and the other small diamete bent hose is from IC to diump valve yeah? Reason i ask is i need that dump valve hose to remove the atmospheric one for a o.e. one and someones cut down the hose. I also found them now for about £30 ;-)
