Unhappy idle control valve qusetion

hi everyone finnally got my hands on another impreza its a t reg classic turbo 2000 but i know the idle control valve is on its way out. what would be the normal symtoms of this i know itll hunt for the idle but should it smoke like mine is doing would this be due to over fuelling or have a bought a bad un?

A faulty ISCV shouldn't cause the motor to smoke.

What colour is the smoke? - oil/fuel related?

Reading the ECU for stored fault codes would be a good place to start, followed by a compression/leakdown test if the ecu shows code 23.

If it's overfuelling, check lambda sensor operation first - You may or maynot get a fault code stoed for this.

Then i'd be looking at fuel rail/injector leaks into the cylinder - Injector O-ring fault

there is a lot of play in the control valve so i striaght away though that as a immediate fault but its cost me a tenner to do about 14miles today obviously without using any boost with this weather and its not far off standard

will do jeff cheers just worried about the obvious you know engine issues but its does not look like the obvious this it does not blow great clouds of smoke out when i rev it even on tick over it is not excessive , but the car drives and responds excellent boost great is really responsive and drives bang on other than a very iratick tickover there is obvioulsy something wrong but i wonder if its just the very cold weather making it look worse than it actually is

Air leak can also cause it to hunt on idle, there shouldnt be any play in the ICV the top should be secure and set to what wash lines you can see from the screws. Can also be due to the cold weather and damp spell, or coolant sensor, 02 sensor etc but rule out the above first.

it was the main cause for the idleing and fueling issues but the other problems where caused from the previous owners lack of care and servicing since i have not even had it a week yet with the weather i could not service it or even check it myself the guys at the clinic gave a fair and honest assessment and pluged there daig system in and the maf was only making 0.2 volt average is 1.5 volt same with the idle sensor as well as the oil was like treacle no anti freeze etc
