Hello

I have a 1997 UK turbo, is there any way I can check for errors without taking it to a dealers.

I have been having some problems lately cars starts fine then as I drive starts to splutter and become very jumpy and seems like loses power for a few seconds then if I keep pumping the accelerator gets going again this happens at any speed, then if i stop the idle goes up and down until it stalls

Can I do this myself? and ideas of the fault?

If you've actually seen the check engine light come on, then yes, search here or on Scoobypedia for the term "black plugs" or "read memory".

If you haven't seen the check engine light come on, you're going to need some outside help.

Any number of possible causes for the behaviour you describe. It'd be a little easier to guess if we knew whether the CEL has been coming on, and if so, what the code(s) are.

 

The check engine light came on briefly once, but not again would the ecu store that fault even though the light only came on for a second or two?

 

yup, it stores the code until its reset
simple to read code,
under steering wheel dash there are 2x black connectors plug them together and turn on the ignition
engine light will flash long slow flashes first then short fast flashes this makes the number ie
2 long flashes
3 short flashes = 23 which is MAF sensor,

I've just tried doing this but the engine light stays on and doesn't flash at all with the 2 black connectors connected together. I've also noticed that there are NO green connectors present under the dash

Oh, mine is a MY97 UK Turbo 2000 model as well.

 

Beastra, I see in your profile you have a Simtek ECU, that'll be why.
