Default kmh to mph ????

hi

i have a 1995 wrx import & its reading the speed & distance in kmh / kms

the car has been de-restricted speed limit wise , how can i get it to read mph & miles ??

change the clocks to uk spec or fit a convertor as i did this on my pld skyline but it de-limited it & converted it unsure if it would work this time

cheers danny

you contradict yourself, you say its been de-restricted so that now makes it read in mph

if your dials only go upto 112 you will need to change the facia, but if you have 180 kph dials this is now good enough to read as mph

It should have been converted (hence we had sva and esva laws) but cars over 10 years old seem to get around this now, just requiring an MOT
Take it to a reputable garage that works on subaru's and see how much they will quote you for having the clocks converted.

if you have 180 kph clocks then if its been converted (mechanical on a 95) then the reading is in mph,if you are doing 30 on the dial and are going slower than others doing 30 mph then its not been converted

i have 180 kph clocks, fitted the gearbox side convertor and job done, 30 kph now is 30 mph on the dials, just change the k to an m

You may find that you have to have it speed checked to ensure its not over reading (or is that under reading) which can only be done at a garage.
Basically not having an SVA means that its not been correctly converted by the looks, hence why this MOT crap law is going out the window soon, but you also have to look at what else on your car isnt legal (as just having a speedo that reads kmh isnt!)

Its not that, its the fact that these old cars come through to our country and are not tested properly, not having a go at you but who ever imported it should have got it done properly and not half hashed it tbh.
You can do a google on the converter, but I would still take it to a garage to get it done, one that can ensure your speedo is correctly calibrated.

This is the difference between the MOT and the ESVA test, the MOT is nowhere near as good

well, either your sat nav is wrong and it ISNT delimited or the convertor you do have fitted is the wrong one

all a mechanical delimiter is a set of gears that slows the speed of the cable down (as kph spins quicker)

confusing,if it is delimited and you cant hit the limiter then a very weird mess if your current clocks are 180 kph the 30/40/100 digits are aligned the exact same distance on the dial as a 180 mph dial facia

That just looks like the converter and not the de limiter.
Saying that they do actually do a speedo kmh/mph mechanical clock recalibration too....

it is de-limited but clocks arnt so it can only have been chipped / mapped out of the ecu itself ( the limiter ) as thats where it is .

the mechanical drive itself must have been left in kmh

will investigate when weather is warmer as car off the road for body work / paint

It sounds like it's had the 180 dials fitted... but WITHOUT the mechanical x0.621 step-down convertor! (because he says that the needle is off the scale past 180!)

correct me if im wrong, but the delimiter is to do with the speedo (not the ecu)

i pished about with "behind the clock" delimiter to do mine and it de-restricted it, and converted the 180kph to 180 mph so i just changed the kph label.

job done.

as above, it was a likkle 0.61 step down converter as discussed.

never touched the ECU !

I've got two x0.621 mech convertors sitting here...

- One that's on old fashoined in-line one with the two cables either side.
- The other is a compact module in black plastic housing.

Interested?

it maywell start at the clocks but will be at the ecu for signal for speed limiter as when you hit it , it misfires the coil packs

The limiter is electrical not mechanical and I believe it receives a signal from the ecu

You can delimited electronically, in addition/instead - by a mappabble ECU. Which is evidently what the OP has done.

Not sure mate. The in-line one is all metal and well sturdy and wont come adfift or anything like that (plus has both the input and output cables, all pre-assembled... you'd just subs. your existing cable with it).

But don't know which of the two is the best or most accurate, as never fitted 'em.

They cost me about £35 all in, each.

£25 for either one?

guys, theres way too much unknown or confusion over the MECHANICAL limiter

im out as i cant keep reading the same over and over its like a dog chasing its tail

all i`ll say is even with the MECHANICAL delimiter in place the limiter is still there, but since a wrx will never touch 180 MPH its not a factor

Yes, of course.

But most people regard this as, effectively 'delimiting', because as you say, you'd never reach 180+ MPH (unless loads of power/high top gear & FD/aero, etc. lol)

the way i sorted mine was to fit a mechanical gearbox to the back of the clocks and then wind back the odometer by hand! it can be done if you know what your doing.
