Hi Shawn, sounds like some play in the bearing to me?

This is the season for problems, my car's central locking is intermittently unlocking all the doors, so I can't even drive the thing to work or the shops because it'll unlock as soon as my back is turned !!

there is only movement in the top to bottom, not side to side, having nothing but problems since getting this car.
is it more likely to be a cv joint over a bearing? when i got the car the cv boot was split which i never knew about and drove it a long way home before i could get a look at it, wondered if the damage was set in then and its just coming to light now?
cheers, shawn

If you have movement up and down,so hands are at 12 o clcok and 6 o clock and theres movement id be more inclined to say its the bottom ball joint of the wishbone

wheel bearing makes a rumbling sound when driving not just a knocking/noise etc etc

when you move it up and down (the wheel to get the movement) look at the bottom ball joint for slop

I agree with this .

The two front driveshafts had been replaced about a month before you got the car Shawn, the boot should have been ok, or the garage I use has made an **** of things?

Wait, are you the former owner of this car? If so, do you happen to know whether, when the shafts were replaced, new stake nuts were used to secure them? How long ago was this btw?

Either way, and especially if the old nuts were re-used, Shawn, add loose driveshaft (and hence loose wheel bearing) to the list of possible causes for the play.

Sorry Splitpin, I don't know anything about how the shafts were replaced other than i got my gargae to replace them and paid the bill.

I'd go round the hub/shaft area just checking for play and re-torquing perhaps? I'm no auto mechanical expert, so just an idea.

well just had it to subaru as it got worrying, looks like it could of been a preverbial (?) lemon this car! turns out its the wheel bearing and going to add to cost as hub is goosed! have spent a small fortune on it since buying and getting no where
shocks/brakes/radiator/cv boot and now this, all before christmas.
not a happy bunny.

cheers for the input guys, shawn.

if i had known any of this i would of had it checked over by my own mechanic day after i got it, think its safe to say your garage made an **** of things as the boot (still slit) was held on with a zip tie, and not a very good one either, hence the grease all over the wheel and contaminated the front disk.
