Note that your car can be built in the previous year but be the next year's model, ie for subaru's its normally september to august.

What do you mean by "legit"? It's terminology used by car manufacturers themselves, so in that respect, yes, it's totally legit.
Subaru, like most manufacturers, starts building "next year's" cars some months before the end of December, in part to make sure that, no matter where you are in the world, you can buy a 2010 model Impreza on the 1st of January.

Your well spoken and specific speach can easily be misconstrued i think.
And yes i was asking is "MY" a legitimate term in the car manufacturer world.
