strange engine noise

strange engine noise
alright guys
my car has a slight knocking noise when at low revs ie below 3k
when its cold it sounds much worse than when its warmed up however you can still just about hear it at full temp, when reved above 3k the noise disappears
if your looking at the engine with the bonnet up it souns like its coming from down the left side of the engine. It also sounds worse inside the vehicle than outside
ive asked a friend whos a mechanic and he seems to think its nothing to wory about, it has been making the noise for about 3K miles now without getting any worse.
the strnge thing is, some times it doesnt do it at all!?!
any ideas guys?
