Default WHATS BETTER PANEL FILTER OR INDUCTION KIT?

Hey guys was just wondering what your thoughts were on induction kits? my96 classic has a piperx one on at the moment but was wondering if a standard airbox with panel filter would be better? When the engine bay is warm i suppose it could/will suffer from heat soak! is this correct?

Your thoughts are much appreciated.

i would always stick to a panel filter becuase of the heat soak thing. people say you should fit a cold air feed (a bit of tumber drier hose! lol) or a build in 3 tonne of sheilding but im still not convinced.
with the air box you suck cool air from the inner wing via the snorkol.

Had induction on my legacy gtb,but opted for the K & N panel filter with standard airbox on my impreza, no maf issues and there good for upto 350 bhp.

yeah you really cant go wrong with a good after market panel filter. as above no maf issues either, so why bother with the expence and hassle of a induction kit.

Do the filters on their own offer any performance gains? and would the fueling have to be altered to suit the greater air flow?
Just wondering as interested in fitting a better filter next service soon.

I'm liking the sound of the panel filter! don't want to lose any horses due to heatsoak!
I believe the uprated panel filters do have more air flow and are protected in the air box from heat soak plus get air fed through the snorkol

A good panel filter i imagine would give a small increase in bhp (3-5),but they will flow cool air into the turbo better than your basic paper element jobbie and last at least 6 x as long when cleaned.

The STi paper panel is supposed to be as good as any but will require replacing at service intervals obviously

In tests by Harvey Performance a variety of panels returned between 0-2bhp. The STi panel was rated worst for both power and filtration, whilst being the most expensive and also serviceable (not lifetime). Unless you go FMIC and MAF-less then there is no point to induction kits. As stated above they draw in hot, dirty engine bay air unless lots of work is put in supplying clean, cold air, and even then any performance benefit is negligible. Vibration is also a known factor on some cars leading to MAF damage (and potentially serious engine damage). The general consensus is to buy a K&N or Green panel purely for its lifetime serviceability.

Those whom have them like them, but Harvey and Scoobymag both found them disappointing in tests IIRC.

I currently have a standard airbox with K&N element in it. I am also going to be fitting my hybrid GT2 front mount soon, am I able to use this front mount with the standard air box, or do I have no choice but to go for an induction kit?

The car is a MY98 Turbo 2000.

The intercooler pipe work runs right through were the existing airbox is now installed,i dont know of anyone who runs a front mount kit with the standard box still in place, but im not saying it cant be done cos it probably can, just never seen it mate.
