Hi my bro just phoned me to say his key's stuck in the ignition and he can't get it out! Don't know what to suggest other than the obvious... has this happened to anyone else? Any ideas

Ahh...

He just called to say he has now snapped the key off, and it's stuck in the ignition.

Fuuu! Guess the situation has just been made 100x worse

Haven't had this happen to me, but might be worth trying to start the car again then turn it off to see if that frees up the key - sure they have tried turning the wheel a bit to ensure its not jammed against the steering lock mechanism. Also make sure they aren't turning the key back too far; mechanism may be worn a bit and allowing the key to turn back too far so it can't be removed?

Hope that helps

Nightmare! Hope they get it sorted - may need new lock barrel etc. if they can't remove the old key

Happened to me on a BMW a few years ago, turned out the barrel has collapsed, new lock set was required.

Used to happen on my classic, turned out the key was worn. New key cured it.

Thanks guys. He seems to think a locksmith will come out and get the old key out and cut a new one for £70... I guess that's worth trying first?

If they can get the old key out then possibly, but if the barrel has collapsed then it may be stuck fast, or won't work even with a new key. May be worth a try though...

mine did this. i eventually got it out. all the keys were worn. so i dissambled the barrel and re-shaped the levers. now it works a treat.

He can get whasts left of that one by disasembling the barell (quiet easy) and then using the master key. i wont explain on a forum how its done. but you can pm.

Thanks for your help guys. Just to let you know he managed to get it turned on again so drove it to a locksmiths this morning. £50 later it's out, new key, and all seems to be working fine so far

Hopefully it was just the key then!
