Default WRX Power steering problem

I have problems with the power steering on my 2003 WRX sportswagon. First, the belt shed part of itself so I replaced it. Next the pump started making grumbling and whining noises and the steering became erratic (sometimes it had power and then not). I had the stering pump removed refurbished, but the fault remained. Lastly I have had the rack removed and refurbished and, you guessed it, the problem is still there. The steering works sometimes, particulary if I keep the revs up, but for no apparent reason it will loss power (usually when I try to turn a corner).

Does anyone have any suggestions as I'm tearing my hair out on this one, not to mention getting considerably poorer.

Thanks in advance

Hello 6420Russell

I have spoken to several specialists and they all seem to think it is the valves in the pump sticking. The noise has gone but the 'power' bit of the steering is still erratic, sometimes it will work and then not. The main dealer wants £600 plus for a new pump, but I believe that they can be sorurced for around £300. If you get any closer to curing it let me know.

thought you had pump refurbished ? does that not include the "sticking valves" ? i would look further into the guys who did the refurb.

Hello guys
I went back to the guy who did the refurb and he is happy to look at it again as he thinks it could be the valve sticking (it only needs a little bit of dirt in it), but I still have to get the pump removed and take it to him. Is there any easy way of getting the pump out without removing the top half of the engine?
