STI V5 SURGING REVS ANY HELP PLEASE??
ive got a problem with my enwly imported V5- starts up fine when cold and revs are ok above 1000 when cold will , but only until temp rises. then revs started coming below 1000, even to 0!! and sometimes cuts out.
No issues when driving, its fine, but when stopping revs go below 1000!! and again cuts out sometimes, ive disconnected MAF and it keeps running , doesnt go off, does that mean MAF is faulty??
ive done ecu check and comes with error code 2 5 , so changed the MAF with 2 second hand ones, but still problem is their, is it worth buying a new MAF??, ps also reset the ECU and changed the coollant sensor , any help would be appreciated thnx

A new maf for a v5 can be had for as little as 80 quid, 2nd hand ones are useless as you dont know if they are knackered or not before you start.
Coolant temp sensor problem only normally shows itself when the car is cold, when the car has warmed up its ok as the default is warm engine, hence why it stalls etc.
You could have a few other issues there, o2 sensor for one, does the car have any modifications? (mainly induction related as these can kill maf sensors)?

Give these a shout (think maf's are 80 quid from here) or pop into a dealer @ 100 quid, depends how quickly you want one

Shell V power is the best, or tesco 99 ron fuel, dont go below this octane rating, 95 ron will kill the engine, 97 will cause you issues and leave BP ultimate well alone
Go have a look in the group buys section ks3 knock analyser, well worth the investment, and a remap (about 210 for the knock analyser and 650 for the remap), cheaper than a 2.5k+ engine rebuild
Tony
PS, dont rag the car with a knackered maf or low octane fuel in, both will damage the engine!

The MY99/00 cars all have similar problems with the MAF sensors, they are a weak part, hate anything like induction kits that move around (vibration) which kills the mafs JDM's are a bit more fickle, the version 5 and 6 STI's are very similar mechanically and the ECU's were the first to be 1. mapped for 100 ron fuel in japan, 2. became mappable with the use of ecutek software.
Be wary of mods, some can cause issues (full decats) but for some reason it varies between cars like my version 5 Type R is quite happy, but I dont push her as she needs mapping and a few other mods doing before that, but I do have a KS3, Knocklink and Lambda link fitted, as well as gauges to monitor whats going on under the bonnet

You can install them yourself, but had mine done by a motor electrician who does my alarms I put the sensor on the block and he did all the wiring, though I had him hard wire the power in rather than use the lighter, leaves that free for any other goodies I want to plug in then
Cost me 20 quid for that

A remap is recommended but you can run her on vpower ok, as long as you have some form of detection set up (ie that ks3 which will give you a visable and audiable warning when set up )

Tells you if you have pre detonation in your engine, thus killing your pistons/crank rather quickly
