This as been probably been asked a thousand times but what petrol whould be best for a 96 wrx import only ever used standard 95 octane but was wondering if 97 would be better.

You really should not be using 95 octane fuel in a import!

97 is perfectly fine for early wrxs.
Check the ecu, passenger footwell underneath the carpet and a there should be a kickplate have a look it should say Z4 (if it's a saloon) open it up to see if there is an extra chipset (bottom rhs of this picture) if there is it will most probably have been fiddled with.

Octane booster is a waste of money unless the car has been chipped/remapped

yes your ecu and turbo will be different to a saloon BUT will still be fine running on 97 ron petrol (BP ultimate doesn't seem to agree with imprezas though)

My local shell garage is being refurbished so i got stuck with a tankfull of BP Ultimate 97 , as myblackwrx has already said my car ran noticably badly / roughly , its a my96 jdm sti wagon . Now back on the good stuff from shell and an ecu reset .
