£6K Budget - which scooby should I buy?
Hi People,
I am new to this forum so hello everyone. I'm not sure if this is where I post this but here goes.
I am looking to buy a scooby with a budget of 6k. It has to be an STI or WRX.
What year should I be looking for for this budget? Any recommenations? Do you guys have any warnings that I should be aware of when buying a used one? What sort of mileage is fair for this budget? Is there any major work that needs to be done at certain mileage levels that I should know about before buying? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks,
Josh

Having owned my classic Catalunya for just 6 months now, I'm not qualified to offer much advice compared to many of the very experienced and capable people on this forum.
All I would suggest is if I were you, I wouldn't spend your entire £6k on the car unless you have an additional reserve to spend on repairs, as there will no doubt be repairs required (possibly very costly ones) in the first year of ownership. Engine rebuilds are not cheap, and are a very real possibility for any secondhand scooby in that kind of price range. Just go into it with your eyes open so that you don't get a nasty shock!

if you buy a car for all of your budget definatly look into the car, dont just jump into it..look for a full history, any mods that have been done makesure you see the reciepts and look who carried out the work, as suggested above theres no reason why you would have to have an engine rebuild in the first year of ownership, ive had my current bugeye just over 2 years now with no issues at all except the usual service costs. granted, when you get used to the power you will want more so save as much as you can but i wouldnt say repairs would be certain at all.
with your budget a late classic STi would be a nice buy or if its newage you want then ide say a Bugeye wrx or you may be able to stretch to a blobeye with a higher millage possably.
take a look at my bugeye, started off standard but after a couple of years and a few pounds spent its where i want it to be (almost)

Thanks for the comments so soon after posting guys.
Ideally I would like one 2001 or newer and with the ppp or more than the standard wrx power.
What are your thoughts on this one?
Subaru : Subaru Impreza WRX 2001 uk model
Scoobzie you are too far away from me, I'm in Bristol and Manchester is as far as I would travel north. Thanks anyway though.

then £6k could be a tear in a salty sea. you wouldn't believe what some guys spend on their subarus. the buying is the easy part. the up keep is the bit that makes you poor and gives your bank manager a heart attack

I had a £6k budget 1mth ago and spent just under that getting the best Subaru I've ever owned. I've had 3, but this one is amazing!
You can get a very nice version 4/5or6 Sti for that money or less!
Version 3/4 you're lookin at £3-4k, version 5/6 you're lookin at £5-6k.
But a car thats already had a few quid spent, an after market ecu like Apexi or Simtek would be very nice. Remember standard ecu's on classic STi's are from the Jap market and are mapped to run on jap fuel which means on uk fuel its a gamble if and when you're engine's bottom end goes (I wont go in to boring details as to the way).
But if it helps, I bouth a mint version 6 with 38k miles and full history, uk and jap with a simtek ecu and other mods running 330bhp all for under £6k and I couldnt be happier
Its a buyers market and dont buy the 1st car you see!
Also a whole day travel there and back to get the perfect car is more than worth it... could be that all the local cars are sheds and that little gem requires a bit of a journey.
Whatever scooby you get you'll fall in love with it thats for sure!
Welcome to the family!

This one will be fresh off the boat... 200BHPCARS.COM : 1998 Subaru Impreza STI Version 5 - 21K miles!!
And you can put the extra grand from your budget to a simtek and reap the joys of circa £330bhp
And lets not 4get the optional ANTI LAG

Its not a Prodrive version look at mine to see the differences in the front pumper side skirts etc.
Ask if it has the PPP certificate if it hasn’t probably just a STD STI. (the exhaust doesn’t look like a PPP am sure they are rounded not sloped)
Looks nice car tho but what else has he got wrong or not telling you

No322 WR sport model probably one of maybe 200ish in the world
so has Alcon 4 pots and different spoiler and Wr sport on the dials themselves
Also has whiteline anti-roll bars and drop links
BC coilovers
VF23 turbo and supporting mods to the tune of 330bhp and 321 lb/ft trq
102k
Paintwork is pretty good
all yours for £5500
