HELP - is this a genuine STI?
Went to see a MY01 today that was advertised as an STI.
It has all the badges in the right places etc - but the log book does NOT stipulate it as an STI. I've got the chassis number but still can't fathom whether its an sti or not. I really like this car - but would prefer an sti so can someone decipher it for me from the chassis number?

going by this i think it's a wrx
Chassis codes are as follows (according to Japanese models):
1st letter determines model type:
G = Impreza
B = Legacy
S = Forester
2nd letter determines body type:
C = Sedan 1st gen. (1993-2000 Impreza, 1989-1994 Legacy) + Coupe (Impreza)
D = Sedan 2nd gen. (2001-current Impreza, 1995-1999 Legacy)
E = Sedan 3rd gen. (2000-2003 Legacy)
L = Sedan 4th gen. (2004-current Legacy)
F = Wagon 1st gen. (1993-2000 Impreza, 1998-2001 Forester)
G = Wagon 2nd gen. (2001-current Impreza, 1995-1999 Legacy, 2002-current Forester)
H = Wagon 3rd gen. (2000-2003 Legacy)
P = Wagon 4th gen. (2004-current Legacy)
3rd letter determines engine type:
A = 2nd gen. Impreza WRX w/ 2.0L turbo
B = 2nd gen. Impreza WRX STi w/ 2.0L turbo high output (we also use this to refer to 2.5L STi)
8 = 1st gen. Impreza WRX w/ 2.0L turbo (includes STi)
5 = Forester & Legacy 2.0L turbo (we also use this to refer to US 2.5L turbo Forester/Legacy)
4th letter determines body revision (generally changes each model year):
A = 1st year
B = 2nd year
C = 3rd year
etc. (for GC8 models C = both 1995 & 1996 model years)
An example would be:
"GDB A/B/C" = Impreza Sedan STi model 2nd gen. (New Age) model year 2001, 2002, 2003 (in US
this would also apply to 2004 Impreza STi because 2003 japanese model year is equivalent to 2004)
A second example would be:
"GD & GG" = applies to all 2nd gen. (New Age) Impreza models regardless of body or engine type
Engine codes are as follows:
EJ20G = 2.0L turbo WRX engine used in early GC8 models
EJ20K = 2.0L turbo WRX STi engine used in Version III & IV models
EJ205 = 2.0L turbo WRX engine used in all 1999 to current WRX models
EJ207 = 2.0L turbo WRX STi engine used in all 1999 to current STi models
EJ255 = 2.5L turbo engine used in US Forester XT & Legacy 2.5L turbo models (+ some overseas)
EJ257 = 2.5L turbo engine used in US Impreza STi models

Put some pics or links to the seller if you can and I'm sure people will be able to help you out. I think you'll need the applied model code rather than the chassis number (VIN) but someone still may be able to do it from that.
Which Car is a WRX STi
For example the applied model code for a 4 door Impreza WRX may be GC8E4DD. This tell's you the car's model type eg; WRX, STI etc and more

2001 SUBARU IMPREZA WRX STI PRO DRIVE TURBO SILVER on eBay (end time 08-Sep-09 21:16:57 BST)
Here is the e-bay link. The intercooler was silver which is what made us think twice about it - he's wanting £4.5k - which i'd pay if i knew i was getting an STI - but i don't want to pay STI money for a WRX.

easiest way to tell, did it have 5 or 6 gears?
5 gears = WRX
6 gears = STI
But from the listing, i would 100% say thats an WRX. Hope the new owner doesnt think they have an STI!

Think I'll leave well alone tbh. I don't mind buying a WRX if its sold as a WRX - but i don't wanna pay good money for a WRX under the impression its an STI! Cheers guys
PS - the listing had ended - but its not sold

a guy in my local club is trying to sell his wrx at the moment, someone nearly bought it the other day thinking it was an STi because it has STi badges all over it, as soon as he found out it is a wrx he pulled out of the sale. why try to be something your not?!
.. ok rant over.
Hope the OP finds a suitable car soon!

The only thing that is STi about that car is the badges.
If your worried about a possible falsely advertised car take a scoot to your nearest subaru dealer and have a good hoke around the wrx's & sti's on the forecourt. Take notes of the differences if it helps you remember.
Hope someone didnt take this guy at face value!
