It's difficult to diagnose this kind of fairly subtle problem without having the car in front of us. Can you give us more info that might help us come up with possible causes?

The "ticking" noise - what's its frequency? Does it speed up/slow down together with the engine speed, or not? Does it go completely if you rev the engine (or get worse)? If you press a screwdriver onto the heatshield/compressor cover/downpipe/uppipe, can you feel the vibration that goes with each "tick"? Does the tick disappear (or get louder, or change in any way) if you poke a screwdriver in any of those places?

Given what you've already said, Micky's guess sounds like a good one, in that if there was anything inside the turbo causing an obvious and regular noise, chances are it wouldn't still be working fine when you tread on it. Therefore, something in the same general area - like a loose heatshield, would make sense given current info. The more you can tell us the better tho.
