Question Which Turbo For 400bhp?

As above. What turbo would be best for around 400bhp, and any ideas of approximate cost?

It's going to be for a road car used for occasional track days, so driveability is the most important thing. I'm obviously looking for the smallest turbo I can get away with!

MD555 or 321H would do the business.

I made 401 bhp with a 321H, 550's ,fmic and a Bob Rawle map. The 321 is expensive but imo worth every penny, they also hold their value quite well so you can recoupe a fair amount back WHEN you decide to go for more power

Thanks. Think I would prefer to stay with a top-mount intercooler if possible! That might sound crazy to some when it's going to be used round Knockhill, but I think it would be more responsive. I want it to be as quick as possible with 400bhp, so every little thing adds up.

Anyone here running that sort of power with a top-mount?

Why do we hear so much about the MD321H/T but so little about the MD555?

Mine had an SC46 on it which made 422bhp / 400lbs @4200rpm (pretty quick spool up!) - not bad for a new age on a std block! Pulled like a train in the mid-range. Turbo wasn't cheap but gave me lots of fun.

Did over 13k without any probs and no meth! Pat Herborne mapped the car and he was pretty impressed with the way it went. For a new age heavyweight it was bloody quick!

Don't forget K18llR has a 2.1lt engine, which makes quite some difference, and IF you actually compare the graphs, you'll see that both cars do in fact make very similar power at comparative RPM points.

That said, you also need to take into account that JP4's car has the benefit of VVT heads.

The MD321H is spot on for what you're asking, generally making 400bhp @ 1.45bar (V Power), and with head room to make circa 430bhp on higher boost.

I would like to see evidence of that including BHP, Torque and Spool up capabilities - and how long they have lasted on a std block - oh and what boost they are running.

go to the top of the page go in to the search bit and type in newage and gt30 or md321T if that doesnt help go on you tube there is a handfull of stock newages that are achieving good times on the strip and making good power.

no doubt that its a good turbo but for that price you might as well go rotated.

Custom manifold and exhaust and a fair bit of labour...not cheap. Not a lot of point rotating for most of us aiming for the 400-500bhp level.

I like to be conservative. People have claimed more, and I think given the right engine/ set up, 450bhp could be achieved. I think the highest so far, but on race fuel, is 491bhp.

I have 4 customers who have all been running 440+ on stock version 8 motors for over 2 years now. Engines are still box fresh, don't use any oil and have carried out numerous drag runs, track days and countless road miles.
Example below.

I had a 321h on my 2.0 litre and it made 415bhp with 365lbs/ft at 1.6bar

But now have a 321t
