Default Power FC Question??

Does the Apexi Power FC also work as an electronic boost controller??

Sorry if this is a daft question, thought it might but then I see people running these along side the likes of a AVCR or Profec B etc

If you buy the boost contol kit it can can control boost and give you 4 boost settings. You wou will not get any of extra features that you get on the avcr though.

What are the other features of an AVCR other than controlling boost like?

You have to buy the boost control kit seperately it is not included in the power fc/commander pacakge.

APEXi - Power FC - Boost Controller Kit - Nengun Performance

The AVC-R allows you to turn up start duty in the lower gears to make target boost, allows you to control the duty at rpm points, set boost at set rpm points to name a few.

Would a manual boost controller suffice as a temp measure for a remap?

... as thats what i've got at the minute

Depends on how modded the car is but personally I would not risk driving the car on boost till it gets mapped.

So would you advise jus turning the boost down as far as it'll go?

Spec at the minute is 3" turbo back, decat, FMIC, induction kit.

But i've got fuel pump, fpr, 550cc injectors, headers and uppipe sat in the house waiting to be fitted, but just trying to get advice on the turbo at the minute as its standard before i get it mapped

best advice would be not to put your foot down and potter round, at least it will be good on fuel

The fuel pump you could fit now but good idea fitting the rest when the car is going to get mapped

Aye, was just gunna leave the lot until day or two before getting it mapped, then drive wherever i end up getting it mapped off boost.

Whats your opinions on what my standard turbo and internals will cope with, the cars a 97 WRX... if i just leave my standard turbo and internals in with the above spec, will the cope. And if decide in the future to move closer to 400bhp with a bigger turbo will the standard internals hold up?

I think your standard turbo will be a VF22, I would not push that beyond 1.4 bar as the turbo blades are quite fragile. Your engine will handle 1.4bar from a VF22 as it should equate to around 320/330bhp.

I would not push the cast pistons on your engine much above 350 bhp to maintain reliability and longevity. If you can find a short block from a newage sti then I would stick that in for your 400bhp target, as it is much more robust and the rods are of a better design.

Sorry dont mean to jump the thread or change topic....

Banny correct me if Im mistaken mate but Im sure the 97 jap models came with a TD05?

Just to add to the PFC bit. M4RKG you`ll get 4 boost settings on your hand controller which you can switch between from there once its all mapped.

But as Banny has mentioned the AVCR will give you more settings that the mapper can use which will give you a better end result when combined with your PFC. I think the E Boost ones give you something similar as well

The TD05 was only fitted up to 1996 where it was fitted with the 90 degree entry, the 16G was never available as a front entry turbo from the factory.

The Impreza switch to front entry in 1997 and any car that comes with a FE 16G turbo, will have been converted and retro fitted.

Get the compressor cover changed from the standard 90 degree entry to accept a front entry inlet pipe. Most turbo places should be able to do that for you at a pretty reasonable price.

The Apexi PFC does control boost, it has 4 settings for you to choose from.

But it is a set target boost so no in gear duty cycle compensation or boost adjustment over the rev range that the AVCR can do.

I thought the boost control kit is just higher reading MAP sensor so that higher boost targets can be achieved (anything over 1 bar for the early classics) and still doesn't have the features I mentioned above
