I did same and it's ok, you just don't get the full benifit. You will need the map tweaked

I did the intercooler swap on my bugeye wrx. I bought a scoop from DR motorsport and then went to the dealers and bought the proper undertray for the sti intercooler. There is not much point in swapping it if you are not going to get the full benefit by also fitting the undertray.

I ran a bugeye with an STi intercooler and the WRX undertray.........worked nicely with a TD05 and mods at 325 BHP. If you can get a onen then it wil lbe better though as the charge will be a bit colder.

You don't need a re-map as the ECU will alter fuel / ignition for the colder charge

there is still quite a lot of benefit because the sti tmic is deeper than the wrx and as he says it's only temporary

yes there deeper and longer and i got hold of an sti undertray today and just need to cut the top part of as im using it with the standard wrx scoop and it doesnt fit inside the wrx scoop unless you mod it as the scoop is not as tall as the sti one .
im not getting an sti scoop as there way to big imo and they go for a ton then you need to paint it etc !!

The scoop is half the benefit, trust me I've been there, WRX mapped for an STI IC and undertray, which was properly cut to fit my WRX scoop. Fitted an STI scoop and undertray a few months later and the measured charge temp difference was very significant (did measure at the time but can't recall exact figures as it was 4 yrs or so ago..!). The effect at three figure speeds was especially significant.

IMHO doing one without the other is a waste of time and money..

This mod is wasted without a properly sized undertray.
Using a WRX tray hides the all important extra surface area of the STi model.

I know this is a very old thread but I've just bought a mishimoto intercooler for my wrx. Will the standard wrx scoop undertray be fine for the intercooler or would I need to buy an sti one ?. I've looked at the size of the mishimoto compared to the oem intercooler and obviously they are bigger, but they are also the same shape.

A Bug STI scoop undertray fits perfectly under a Blob WRX Scoop.

I've got an 08 hatch mate. I'm gonna stick with the oem wrx undertray as the sti tray is a different shape to the wrx one aswell as a different shape intercooler.

ill probably have an 08 sti scoop undertray for sale if anyone's interested.
