Default turbo problems

i got a uk wrx my01 wagon, and the turbo is making a noise at about 3000rpm,took it to a subaru dealer to check out,and after an hour or so they told me it could be the turbo but it was too hot to make sure.and charged me 70 quid!!!!anyhow i asked them how much a new turbo would set me back, like £1000-£1500+labour.my question is this...is it worth shelling this amount of cash out on a car thats only worth £3000.i love my car but.....

Well i have a td04 turbo which i think your car has. Its only covered 45000 and is in perfect working order. You can have it for £40 + post. And you could get any half decent machanic to fit it.

In a word op, no a turbo will cost you less than £100 secondhand and are easy to fit as well. When you say noise what kind of noise do you mean? For the price you have been quoted by subaru you could get a bigger turbo and get it mapped, and still have enough for a few weekends out with the lads.

A sound clip of this noise would be great?

good old main dealers! my scooby has never and will never go near one.
is the noise a metalic rattle? i had a ratlle just at 3000rpm. it took me ages to trace it. one of the heat sheild tabs had shearded but not broken off completly. to look at it was fine and it was still held on fine but only under very close inspection could you see the shear. a couple of penny washers later and the noise is gone.

thats what i thought!!!!!!the sound is like a metalic rattle type thing, subaru thought it might be a heat shield problem.i told them it doesnt make the noise if you rev it at a stand still...but they spent 30 mins trying it,so i took them out on the road and they heard it..lol after another 30 mins of reving it on the ramp they told me they found the problem...it was the bung in the exaust rattling.so i pointed out trying it on the road without the bung.and low and behold...the noise was still there,to be honest i dont know anything about mechanics..but i know what my car should sound like..and it cost me £20 in fuel to get it to them,at less than 2300rpm all the way
