Default overheating

my car has started to overheat abit, when im driving along ill notice that the temperature gauge is away up on the hot side and stay there or continue to rise for awhile then suddenly itll start to drop back down to normal temp.

im thinkin it my be a goosed thermostat, anyone got any thoughts?

could be thermostat or maybe an air lock somewhere - would be worth checking coolant levels i reckon. You could test the thermostat by removing it and putting it in cold water to make sure it closes fully, then putting it in hot water to see if it opens okay. I had a similar problem in my classic which turned out to be low coolant due to leaky rad.
