Question Hi, new here need help with a tappety engine

Hi, I have recently brought a 97 wrx import, I brought it around 3 weeks ago. When i brought it the owner made me aware it was quite tappety when cold but calmed down once warm. Basically when cold is pretty tappety when reved and a bit tappety on idle. Once warmed up the noise definately gets much quieter and cant really be heard when on idle but if i hold my foot over the accelerator and add some slight revs can still hear it tapping a bit but definatley no knocking. it runs very well, pulls very well and is more a less very smooth and does not smoke at all or burn oil. Please give me some advice and rassure me my car will be ok.

Thanks

How many miles does it have on it? Could be a sign of old oil and may improve if you put some fresh oil in. Could also be piston slap, more of an issue on a cold engine but goes when warmed up.

I'm not sure when it changed, but it may have solid lifters with buckets that need re-shimming. I've got a 51 plate WRX and mine needs doing, not expensive for the shims, but a big job in that the cambelt comes off as do the cams

If they are hydraulic, an oil change may work, but you may well need to replace some of the hydraulic tappets. Can probably run forever like that, but if it gets too bad you'll compromise you air flow as the valves won't fully open
